Use the MarkV source port's WinQuake executable to get the original comfy software renderer. Also turn off animation interpolation as well to make the game look like it used to. And mess around with the resolutions. I like to play with 320x240 resolution but filling a 1080 monitor to give that playing-in-MSDOS-vibe. pic related, although I've actually learned how to play the game in DOSBox and use that these days instead.
