Japan was simply the testing grounds. If these expensive consoles sold well there, they would get sold around the world, but nobody wants to pay more than ~$300 for a console, and certainly not for addons, but they just kept trying.

Why does Japan have no domestic game preservation efforts of their own and everything still has to be imported by foreigners who dump these games?
Computer systems like PC-98 are pretty much a lost cause because of this.
