btw usually when you see SQ shilling around here it's also me. I liked CV, but Simon's Quest was my jam. To this day it might be my favorite NES game.

I've always liked Simon's Quest but I have to admit it's pretty lacking in some areas. Still, it hits so many notes that I love.

A sense of time passing, a big open world to explore and mysteries to figure out.

I think it's funny we got stuck with the term Metroidvania when Simon's Quest was essentially the same ideas and made around the same time as Metroid 1.

I also think it's funny that we will never know who actually coined the term since both Scott Sharkey and Jeremy Parish claim to hate it and blame the other.

It's only a failure if you see it being a product of it's time as a negative. This was a time when there wasn't an internet to look everything up, so it created a kind of meta game around the game.

Games like Simon's Quest, you almost needed to be in the know in a way to finish. I remember having to ask around in class what the fuck to do. This was a big part of fighting games when they caught on. There was a meta game around learning what everyone could do. And I think in both cases that was an intentional part of their design.

But I also don't think that makes them bad, that the experience of figuring out the game is ephemeral and a collective experience that happens and is gone, but making way for the next one.

With the original translation there are certain things like kneeling with the crystal that are ridiculous to expect people to figure out on their own. I had to ask a guy in my class and he only knew because of Nintendo Power.

All that said, it's my favorite classicvania, among my favorite NES games and pretty much always has been. Opinions are never universal.

My favorite overall is Circle of the Moon. My favorite retro one is Simon's Quest and still one of my favorite NES games. I like the metroid style much more. Something about free roaming open world games has always really appealed to me.

Let's not get into yet another thousand post thread about the difference between Zelda style action adventures and Secret of Mana style Action-RGPs again. If you're one of the people who wants to blur or ignore that distinction then whatever, think what you will.

But suffice to say, if you are one of the many who makes the distinction between them Beyond Oasis is even farther removed from an ARPG like SoM than Zelda is. It's essentially an action-puzzle game, other than the setting and top down perspective it has no real RPG trappings.

RPG mechanics wise Simon's Quest is closer to an RPG in every way.

Yes, but it's the player's choice whether they want to go for the biggest exploits to make the game as easy as possible or to use the freedom to experiment with interesting challenges and approaches.

I like all the 2D Castlevanias, but the metroid style ones are those I find myself coming back to more often. I would prefer another like Simon's Quest though. With lots of exploration, but without killing enemies giving XP or loot grinding.

It's almost sort of metroidvania so it may not be what you're looking for, but Simon's Quest was one of my favorite games as a kid for that very reason.

Ecco the Dolphin isn't exactly a platformer but gives me a lot of those feelings as well.

Metal Warriors also not exactly a platformer, but very open and adventury feeling.

Good age, to pick, very formative. That was the year I played both Final Fantasy and Simon's Quest. I hadn't been a huge fan of the first Castlevania, but SQ really caught my attention and to this day remains one of my all time favorite games.

I used to feel this way, but realized it's still pretty easy to avoid. Now when I get a new game I go into a bit of a blackout mode and don't read forums or guides about it. If I get stuck or want to know something specific it's nice to know I can google it for a quick tip, but in general it's fun to just go back to exploring and learning a game on my own.

I somehow avoided most bullshit rumors, or never believed them enough that I remember them anymore. The thing that stands out in my memory is one that sounded like a bullshit rumor to me but turned out to be true.

I was 11 or 12 and had been stuck in Simon's Quest for ages with no clue what to do. There was a douchey kid a couple years older in my lunchroom who overheard me talking with my friends about it and told me to take the blue crystal and crouch in this one spot.

I remember thinking he was probably lying because he was usually a dick, but tried anyways because I didn't know what else to do and was delighted when it worked. I probably should have thanked him.

I remember them, but never thought about calling. I didn't use strategy guides either, any problem I was stuck on I would just ask other kids. It was still pretty rare, but I do remember a kid a grade above me explaining the crouching with the crystal in Simon's Quest which I'm eternally thankful for. I don't think I ever would have sussed that one out.

Castlevania II gets a lot of shit, but I loved it as a kid and I still do. Shitty translation and all.
