The Red Cross owns the rights and all to a red cross on a white background representing medical aid, and they've been throwing their weight around in recent years, threatening various publishers and devs over the use of their logo (though in my opinion this is practically like a genericized trademark).

The result is, new games don't feature red crosses on white medikites anymore (or ambulances), and re-releases of old games will now edit them out. Different re-releaeses have different approaches, Doom initially had them replaced with red and white pills in the PS3/360 days, and Duke would do the same, Quake 2 would substitute it with that ugly blue symbol you might see on some ambulances, I don't know what it's called. The recent ports of Doom simple colored the crosses green instead, the rerelease of Doom 64 coloring the crosses bright blue.

Then there's the Wolfenstein 3D levels in Doom 2, and the Waffen SS troopers, due to classifications and ratings in Germany giving entertainment products a hard time for featuring Nazis and Hitler (even in the context of blasting them into pieces for score), the swastikas are replaced with a generic symbol as seen in the Euro releases of the later Wolfenstein games, and they shave off Hitler's mustache, the "Schutzstaffel!" voiceline is also dubbed over. For new AAA releases of series like Wolfenstein, they will apparently do a separate German version, but re-releasing old games, publishers very seldom bother doing that.

This is kinda shitty, but it's a lot better than how goddamn lazy it was in the 360/PS3 era, where they just really shittily turned the SS troopers into regular Zombiemen with fucked up offsets, then just removed all the Wolf 3D/Nazi references from MAP31 and MAP32, leaving the walls bare and playing .midis from previous levels.

Supposedly though, German ratings have become more lenient in recent years.
