Will there ever be a good filter that /vr/ will accept?

With the ever increasing resolution of modern monitors, playing without filters is going to be less and less feasible.

But with the increasing processing power, doesn't the more modern and sophisticated filter/scaling filters and algorithms make a very decent job?

While we're already on that topic, which filter is best? The xbr family sounds and looks pretty convincing (pic related)

Does anyone on /vr/ know how to use the high quality filters when emulating GBA games?

VBA-M on Linux (GTK port) somehow doesn't give me any option to pick HQ3x or HQ4x even though the HQ filters are touted as a feature of VBA-M.

More generally, what filters do you prefer/recommend, /vr/? I'm currently playing Golden Sun: The Lost Age. Shit is so cash.
