That kind of games are basically the equivalent of a Wes Anderson movie: they're still mainstream enough that a lot of people enjoy them, but at the same time they are more idiosyncratic and try a less broad appeal (than say, Avatar as a film or Ocarina of Time as a game). A certain kind of consumer HATES that sort of thing.

It's just a step further from the basic knee-jerk rejection for popular products: popularity "insults" the sense of individuality of some, but it's even worse when the product actually CONVEYS individuality of its own: the "pretentious garbage" or "style over substance" stock responses soon follow.

I find Zelda II to be shallow and pedantic
