>Reminder that even in 1997, the PC Engine was considered a quirky system for Japanese games.
It was always the "otaku" console even contemporaneously in Japan. The Mega Drive was for Westaboos and The Super Famicom was for normalfags

Genesis was for actual video game enthusiasts, PCE took the otaku market and Nintendo still had their hold on the normlafags.

I do think magazines like Nintendo Power and even stuff like EGM and Gamepro to an extent created a sense of community among their readers and their relationship to the magazines and the games featured that doesn't happen on the internet nearly as much. Discussion forums attempted that but the ability to directly argue and debate with others creates more drama and bickering than creating a sense of any kind of community with value. Too bad Nintendo betrayed that sensation of being in a club with other friends during the Wii age where they went completely basic corporate / PR doublespeak.

>Sega were completely behind Nintendo in Japan before 5th gen.

Because NEC's huge PC-98/PC Engine coomer market moved over to Sega's 32-bit consoles after NEC quit making their own systems.

The Japanese stereotypes for each of the consoles is way funnier. Got a good chuckle the first time I saw these.

PC Engine - for shut in perverts, the otaku coomer, the titty machine

MegaDrive - for arcade hardcores and scenesters

It's really hard to say because every time I try to think of an excuse, I keep seeing more and more similarities between the two.
>Nintendo is more family friend-
Maybe in terms of North America, but only for a brief period. Mortal Kombat II came out on SNES in all its bloody glory no problem. Super Metroid has corpses (with some blood on them, too) right on the title screen.
>Sega is more matur-
Sonic, Castle of Illusion, Fantasy Zone...
I dunno. As someone who grew up with both Mega Drive and Super Nintendo, I can't think of anything valid other than "people who are impressionable to certain marketing tricks", but even then, marketing was edgy for both Sega and Nintendo in USA, it was just the style in the west.
I don't think there was a real division between people who were wildly different in terms of psychological aspects until brands like playstation or xbox appeared.
