It's a stunted genre when it comes to gameplay, so I'm assuming he means the production values supercharging. Until CT, even in big profile series like Final Fantasy and DQ, there had only been a very even progression in the presentation; Trigger felt like an huge jump forward: huge sprites with more expressive animation, organic map layouts instead of the traditional blocky environments, and a general focus on crazy anime-ish setpieces instead of the usual mellower flow.

From then on, big name RPGs were all about huge spectacle and barging fully into the mainstream instead of just polishing their nearly niche-ness. I'd say FF7 owes as much to CT as it does to its actual genetics

It even stepped a little into the gameplay; I'm not a genre diehard so I wouldn't know, but I assume it was at least one of the first jRPGs that integrated the battles into the regular maps
