Doom originally supports using the mouse for fast and precise horizontal turning, you can't look up or down, but the added freedom and mobility of just mouseturning is both original and worthwhile.
Romero played with keyboard and mouseturning, and you can see that distinct movement in his demos playing in attract mode.

The game incorporated vertical auto-aiming to compensate for the lack of true 3D aiming, and thus the original levels are balanced for that. A few instances will let you break an original level over your knees if you have the ability to freely aim up and down, but for most of the levels, turning off the auto-aim and using freelook (through a sourceport, obviously), doesn't add up to TOO much of an advantage, but it's still noticeable and it wouldn't be "kosher".

If you've already beat Doom as is, do as you feel like. I always found the Quake/Half-Life/Duke style of freelook without auto-aim very pleasant, and these days I just prefer that as a matter of comfort, to the point that I sometimes outright prefer a twinstick gamepad for classic horizontally locked Doom.
