I love this idea for a thread! It's quite fun.

>Sonic & Tails (GG/MS)
It's a mediocre Sonic installment, but graphics and OST are stellar and the atmosphere is nice, but having to get 100 rings to access special stages to get the emeralds makes you play too slow... they should've make you explore to find the emeralds like in its 8-Bit predecessors.

>Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin (GG/MS)
So... one guy? No continues?! Well, jokes aside, this really is my main complaint here, the fact that you can't let your HP get to 0 at any point without having to replay the whole thing really sucks and makes you resent all of the other flaws here even more, needed continues badly.

>Yu-Gi-Oh! Dark Duel Stories (GBC)
An actual currency system with a shop that you can buy and sell cards from, similar to Sacred Cards for GBA. A lot of the cards here have frankly ridiculous drop rates, some of them are fan favorites... this makes it a pain to actually get the cards you want, which is quite a shame.

On a rare occasion OP didn't suck cocks.

>Generic tips n tricks thread.
Sonic 2 on Game Gear
I know most struggle with the 1st boss on this one, my tip is to stand still around the end of that slope, near the boss, and when the bomb comes you run down, towards the boss, then jump, targeting the top right corner, and after that you correct your jump towards the left, if done right, you should dodge the bomb.

>Thanks anon. I cope with the never ending sorrow and bleakness of the modern world by getting good at videogames, and it has served me well.
I do the same really, it's one of the things we have that can give positive emotion on a regular basis. Keep it up, anon! I wish you the best.

>You mean 1 life run? 1cc = without using continues
Yes! I managed to complete Sonic the Hedgehog (1991/SMD) 100% without losing a single life, I had to pull it off at least once in my favorite video game of all time, I tried many times and often came short due to messing up on a single or couple of occasions, but eventurally I did it, a perfect run, or as close as I can get to perfect at least.

>Holy shit I finally beat this game with all six chaos emeralds. Got a game over during the final battle but thankfully had a continue I must've earned in one of the special stages.
Congratulations, OP! I recall the 1st time I pulled this off, it took a while, but it's quite rewarding, I'm glad you've managed to do so.

>I'm a Mario fan but Sonic Adventure 1 is one of my absolute favorite games so I thought it's finally time to give the Mega Drive games a try.
Well, if you enjoy Sonic Adventure then the Genesis titles are probably going to be quite an enjoyable time for you, as Sonic Adventure is probably the 3D installment that most closely replicated the originals' mechanics and feel. Also, if you're more of a Mario fan, I definitely recommend the 8bit installments as they feel more like a traditional Mario like platformer, especially Sonic 1, it's also a smoother experience to 100% since in Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 you get the emeralds by exploring levels and finding them.

>I thought Sonic games were easy like Kirby but this was pretty damn tough. Amazing game overall. Please tell me Sonic 2 is easier
I find Sonic 2 to be easier than Sonic 1 if you're just going from start to finish, since the level design it more suited for speed, and you have the spin dash, as long as you use it wisely and press down to roll in slopes you should be fine... if you're going for 100% though, I find it much harder, as the special stages can be much more punishing than Sonic 1, at least you get more attempts at the emeralds, but you'll probably fail them more often too, also the last level is quite tough.

Anyways, good luck!

P.S. If you play Sonic 2 (8bit) then go for the Master System version and stay far away from the Game Gear one, but for Sonic 1 (8bit) either of them is fine.

>Why would you include that? Outside of its music it's pure jank. A game where you can't even go fast.
I'm not the poster you've replied to, but I'll answer it since Sonic 3D Blast is a favorite of mine. I'll agree that the OST is the best aspect of it, it's sublime even to this day, however I wouldn't say that the rest is bad. When it comes to the speed, it's definitely slower than previous Genesis installments, however it does have a thing in common with them, once you know the level layouts a bit, which isn't too hard to get the hang of since they're not too big, going fast is viable, you never reach the speed you'd expect from Sonic, which is a bummer, and most players will take it slow at first, but it can be played fast with some practice... and rating it purely as an isometric collectathon platformer, it's perfectly fine, and can be fun for those that are into the genre, it's not Super Mario 64 or Banjo-Kazooie, not even close, but it's the closest Sonic has ever gotten to a collectathon, so it's interesting to play for that alone.

Did this thread really went into the discussion about Sonic being fundamentally flawed as a video game? Jeez, nothing against us having more controversion conversations, it's why image boards can be interesting in the first place, but as someone who got to see the rewriting of history this franchise has suffered, it always baffles me. At first most people agreed that Sonic was good up until the Adventure duology or Heroes... then suddently all of those titles started getting harshly criticized on the web and consensus shifted to only the 2D classics being good... and now suddently I'm seeing the argument that Sonic was never good a lot more often. I don't recall this happening to any other popular franchise, the idea that it was always fundamentally flawed and poor in concept, that all of the acclaim it got was some sort of collective delusion by most people at the time. Sonic is a platformer with physics and level design that encourage experimentation and learning to go faster every time, with the rings mechanic making sure you don't play too cautiously, to keep the experience exhilarating. Of course it slows down at times and some levels might be trickier to see what's coming ahead, which can lead to you getting hit... but it's a video game, you can win or lose, and as you play and learn you also get better.

>Travellers Tales should've kept making every Sonic game
I wouldn't have minded this much, they were competent developers and a lot of their worse titles can be explained by publishers messing them up or giving them tight and downright unreasonable schedules to work with. While Sonic Team has produced decent titles since Adventure, they've also produced a lot of subpar titles, maybe with Traveller's Tales it would've been different, though I'm sure SEGA would've been just as unreasonable with them as they've been with Sonic Team, like pushing for holiday seasons and anniversary titles even if it's not finished properly yet. I might be a minority in this, but I have a soft spot for Sonic 3D Blast, love the level design for some reason.

Well, it has a trilogy that was critically aclaimed in the early 90's, so that alone already created a huge and loyal fanbase, also we can't forget that we're talking about the face of Sega at the time and even today, the company that back then was the only one who rivaled Nintendo in the west, this alone makes Sonic a timeless icon of the industry for anyone that grew up and got into video games at that time, which is a lot of people. After that he made the jump to 3D on the Dreamcast, which was a console that many appreciate to this day, and while the Adventure series has a mixed reputation nowadays, at the time it was popular, with high scores on reviews, and with a new wave of fans. After that he became multiplatform, with the Adventure titles ported to the Game Cube, and the Advance series developed for the Game Boy, it's very common to see Sonic fans that didn't grow up with the Genesis, but instead with the early 2000's titles on Nintendo consoles, so that's yet another huge wave of fans that the series got. Of course, after that came the decline, with Shadow The Hedgehog and Sonic '06 being what many though to be the end, something the series wouldn't recover from, but it did with Unleashed, which had a mixed reception, but a solid foundation in the boost formula, which many adored, and they built on that foundation with Colors and Generations, so again we had a new have of aclaimed Sonic titles for a new generation to play and become fans of the character.

So we have a franchise that took over a decade of solid released to get its first truly bad main series titles, and also released more solid titles after that bad phase too, there were many different moments in which Sonic did well, never quite like the original trilogy, but well enough to get new fans, and the thing about Sonic is that once you enjoy one of his titles, you see that the potential for greatness is there, so people stick around to see what comes out of the series.

This. Sonic 1 on the Game Gear feels more polished than in the Master System, however the screen crunch on Game Gear Sonic 2 makes it really unforgiving and unfair, while in the Master System the difficulty feels on point.

Anons, if you've enjoyed Deep Duck Trouble, then I definitely recommend The Lucky Dime Caper, I wouldn't say it's better, because they do have many differences, so it's subjective, but it's another good Donald Duck video game.

I find this game to be quite underrated, not saying it's a great game by any means, it's too flawed for that, but decent, certainly not a terrible game like it's usually considered to be on the web.

Obviously the best way to play this one is with the Director's Cut, which improves it exponentially, especially with the password system, so you don't have to beat it in one go, however the original is still a perfectly playable and competent platformer.

One thing that makes me really infatuated by this game is the fact that it's pretty much the only real collectathon in the franchise, perhaps alongside Sonic Labyrinth, though in this one you can actually run and jump, so it feels more like a real Sonic game.

I'd love to see SEGA try this formula again in the future, not for a main series title, but for a spinoff, like 3D Blast was always meant to be from the start, however this time actually 3D instead of isometric, and with all of the content DX added, alongside some new ideas for extra stuff.
