Obviously the point was to grab attention and be memorable, not to convey discrete facts to autists. Juxtaposition, contrast-- monsters and demons coupled with a sense of humor and a distinctive mascot.

Videogame box art is often very "busy," but FF6 isn't. FF6 has good color choices and along with the tasteful and elegant gold lettering, and the box really stood out from other games on the shelf (without being a little too simple-- picrel). And obviously, the shadow of the monster is a reference to the magazine ad campaign.

>I'm not american so that's why I'm asking: As an american kid was this cover appealing to you?
That cover? Yes, a bit. It's not particularly appealing but probably not for the reasons you think. The Japanese one wouldn't have been any better.

That cover looks like it's trying to cash in on the popularity of Conan the Barbarian, which is fine except Breath of Fire came out a decade too late for that. When I saw that, I saw a He-Man rip off several years after nobody gave a shit about He-Man. Plus it conveys the kind of desolate and sun-blasted wilderness typical of 80s Conan settings. I'm not usually a fan of that particular type of setting (though I don't hate it), so for that reason the cover wouldn't be especially appealing.

Basically, this cover tries too hard. The style itself isn't bad. I like the presentation of the characters. But it doesn't match what's in the game. If you flip the box over you'll see a couple of screenshots of bog standard top-down JRPG gameplay.

pic related was much more eye-catching to me.

I was reading up on all the differences made to this release and holy shit, what were they thinking? Removing character abilities? Is the PSP version the best way to play this then?

So, my brother bought the original US version of IV for snes.
I hear it has some translation problems, but is it still worth playing through as my first version of IV, or is it a mess?
Also, I don't care if other versions have extra content, so don't tell me it's terrible only because of that.
