>horrendous performance with only a few sprites on screen
>drab use of colour
>mind numbingly repetitive music
>bad spritework (why is her head the same size as her body?)
>braindead difficulty

Metroid is a bad, bad game, and here's why.
1) Badly programmed--enemies follow you through doors, causing you to take unneeded damage.
2a) Shitty visuals, straight out of pac-man
2b) Areas designed out of simple blocks
3) "Space-themed" music simply bleeps and bloops, making it difficult for future composers of the series to remix
This is ignoring nitpicks llke how you don't start with longbeam. Since every area looks identical, you needed a guide or nintendo power to complete it. Overall a shitboring game. Hard to believe people back then had standards shitty enough to enjoy it.

When you played Metroid for the first time, were you doing any mapping on paper, or taking notes? I have yet to play through this game, and refuse to look at the maps or guides available online.
I didn't get to play it when it was current and I'm kind of wondering how kids back then played it

I'm looking for more gaming experiences like the first two Metroid games. No, not like Super Metroid or the overused "Metroidvania" label, but rather the bleak loneliness and tense exploration with no real indication of where you're going like in the first two.

Surely there are other games with similar themes? Don't even have to be retro! It just seems that ever since Super Metroid, the Metroid formula was supplanted by the new style of Super, and that ended up being the one copied again and again and again.

And yes I'm aware of Kid Icarus and its sequel. While the game plays somewhat similarly (albeit more vertically), it doesn't really share the same tone and I wouldn't really say it's about exploration.

Help?
