Save batteries are easy to replace, and if you replace it the game should be perfectly good for well over 20 years, at least on that part. You can also use tools to read the charge on a battery to learn its state.

There's one or two other things which you may need to address over long periods of time, but they're very fixable, and beyond that, if you store them decently and are careful with them, they'll hold up. When it comes to 80s/90s/00s consoles and cartridges like by Nintendo and Sega, it's all pretty rudimentary and straightforward technology.

You can read this guide, and maybe you don't have the tools or skills to do these things, but they will let you understand the kind of problems a game cartridge is likely to have, and how they can all be fixed.
There are some places which will do this stuff for you for a fee, and given how easy it is, it's generally not very expensive.

I think maybe there was a Game Gear exclusive Megaman game or two? I may be wrong though, I don't have a lot of familiarity with Sega games.

If you'd enjoy refurbishing a Game Gear in a sorry state though, that'd be a good enough reason, if anything you could sell it on and make a small profit on it, or maybe give it as a gift to a good friend.
