>I'm talking about games that rescue gameplay elements from 80s/90s 2D games while innovating.

Yes, that happens all the time.

In a way you're right. I disagree with you in that I don't have a problem with those communities. I both find them less obnoxious in general, and I care much less about communities I do find obnoxious or silly. But even though I don't feel that way, I get that you and some others do and that it affects your enjoyment of games.

I will say this, the internet age is distinctly different from the pre-internet age, and the change came about extremely quickly as these things go. It's still in the process of course, but it's speed is remarkable.

So if you want to use the "retro" moniker to apply to games from before the big shift (mid 00's, iPhone) as a different category then what you're saying makes sense. It's not just games though, it's literally everything.

This is a time of great change we're entering but it will be glorious. after the global civil war is overno not a joke

While true, I think in retro games there are many where the developers didn't yet understand how to use the limitations as much to their advantage so there are many games that are simple to the point of being boring.

While a lot of modern games do get bloated with feature creep, when there is a simple, focused game it's sometimes really good.

>that's despite the industry, not because of it.

I consider anyone who makes games as part of the industry, so I find it really hard to agree with that since they're the ones giving me so many games I like.

>look at current Peggle variants and weep.
I don't weep, I just don't play them. Peggle, Nights and 2 were plenty of that kind of game. Now there's other stuff to play.

>You can get tons of shallow crap, but nothing of substance

I disagree with this as well. To name just a couple of favorites, Monster Hunter, Etrian Odyssey, fighting games and roguelikes in general, all have a ton of substance. Even smaller games like this seemingly cute and simple little game can have a lot to them. It's actually a maddeningly difficult puzzle platformer.

There are some modern games that are very very hard though and partially because they rely on things arcade games and the like used to do.

Super Meatboy wasn't my thing but apparently gets quite hard. Though in it you always respawn quickly which throws that out a little.

This series though, Rabi Laby looks like a cutesy indie baby game but is one of the most sadistic puzzle platformers ever.

In general though, most people didn't like old arcade difficulty so most games aren't designed for it.
