I played this game for years in the past, but never hardcore, and now that I'm starting hardcore I have a few questions.

So usually I get by on mediocre gear until I get to hell where I can get high quality socketed items to make runewords. I feel like this strategy won't work as well in hardcore. Should I settle to make runewords in gear I can get in normal/nightmare, then keep working up? For example, I'm wondering if I should try to make an insight while I'm still in normal mode, but I'm thinking of waiting till nightmare, but even then the polearm I get won't be as good as I would want it to be.
