I'm guessing the USA numbers also include Mexico and Latin America.
I'm from Argentina and Nintendo was present here during the 90s, we got the same US-NTSC stuff that USA did.

argie here, I was 10 or 11 when SM64 came out and while I knew a bit of english, most of the times I didn't give 2 fucks about reading in vidya, I went straight to playing (I didn't got into RPGs until later on).
I think I knew before hand that you had to jump into paintings because most magazines of the time (not just official Nintendo ones but many others that were also hyping Mario 64) talked about how the game worked. I think I either knew before hand, or figured it right away because the painting starts doing a wobbly movement when you get close to it, hinting that you need to do something with it (jump!).
I do remember though that I was having a hard time figuring out how to get some stars, then I started paying attention to the text before the levels, which would give vague descriptions in english about how to obtain the stars.
