none of that shit matters. Lots of JRPGs have a light tone. It's just most of them use Dragon Quest as a literal base to build upon, which leaves Dragon Quest fucking worthless as a series. Playing Dragon Quest when games like Shadow Hearts, the Mario RPGs, Baten Kaitos, and yes, Final Fantasy exist is fucking retarded.
It's the equivalent of choosing to play with the flat green lego plane by itself.

And there's no excuse. This series used to be revolutionary. The first two games got the entire fucking JRPG ball rolling. The third game was a massive leap forward for the genre. Then for no apparent reason they decided Dragon Quest needed to remain "traditional" and be the same for the next 30 goddamn years while nearly every other JRPG ever made from the SNES onward experimented and innovated and pushed the genre forward. It was well and truly dead when they somehow thought Dragon Quest 7 was acceptable to release on the fucking PS1, the system that brought us FF7, Parasite Eve, Xenogears, Valkyrie Profile, FF Tactics, the list could go on and on.
