I hope by that you mean full romsets and not downloaded them individually

... You did remember the Euro and Japanese computers, didn't you?

You can save each one by core to fix this. I will say though that's a great idea, ideally everyone should do this instead of just using an Xbox controller or whatever. I have two bluetooth Genesis controllers (three-button and six-button) and a Saturn one but I'm still missing most of the others

>>10835889
Ares comes very close if not better in some ways, it's just not as portable yet (e.g. I can't use it on my TV stick). Some cores are also better standalone, like Saturn and GameCube/Wii. I do really like the convenience RetroArch offers though

This is a bit silly. We download full romsets for the convenience of having any game available at anytime instead of spending forever downloading each game individually. The sets themselves are also very small in most cases, so it just makes more sense to download them all at once. There's also consoles like 32X and Virtual Boy that literally only have like forty games on them

In my own case I got a full English-friendly SEGA CD romset because I was so interested in the platform and was tired of downloading every game one by one. And, unlike physical collections, this doesn't actually take up any shelf space. It does however cost a few extra dollars (or more, depending on how many roms you have and for what systems) but still nowhere near as much as physical collecting.

Sure. There's plenty of good games out there.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/games/systems

Just pick any system and a go into your favorite category (platformers, shmups, RPG's, etc.) Find a game that looks interesting, maybe find a few clips on YouTube, then download said game and enjoy in your favorite emulator. Easy

Literally just emulate them first, then you can decide which one you like the most

I guess if it were up to me I would go with Urban Strike, those are all completely different types of games though. Any other shmups or platformers?

Absolutely not. I already own everything I want digitally including a full US SEGA CD set. No way I have all the space for that stuff in person.

You can buy the xStation mod kit or just buy one pre-modded, though at that rate there are cheaper ways to emulate PS1 on your TV. You might literally not need to buy anything at all if you already have a smart TV

Other option is just PS Classic

I should add to this, I still prefer these over using modern controllers for retro games, feels more authentic this way, even if it's still emulation. The right controller + CRT filter feels way better than just using a basic Xbox controller or something on your PC

Basically this. SEGA CD and 32X both require their own power source, other systems have lasers that go faulty over time, cartridges and pin connectors need to be cleaned every so often, Game Boy and other handhelds had awful unlit screens and required batteries to run, and sometimes the lightest tap on a console can crash a game. Emulation removes all of that and just makes them fun and easy to play

You don't get laughed at for using original hardware. You get (rightfully) laughed at for acting like it is the only proper way to play video games and anything emulated is "unplayable"

I grew up with original hardware but collectors and purists have really run it into the ground. Prefer emulating nowadays anyway, way faster and more convenient, never mind that it's free

I emulate on budget handhelds/Famiclones and TV sticks. For handhelds it's whatever proprietary software it comes with, for the TV sticks I use RetroArch. Lately just playing my Famiclone handheld

It's fine. Best used for lower end consoles but can still handle PS1 and Dreamcast games as well. For newer consoles yeah standalone is probably better, but still.

Mainly it's a very nice frontend for using on a TV imo.

CRT's were replaced the moment flatscreens were invented. They're cute and all but I would never take one over my 42" or 60" displays

Most people are actually not this annoying about it, but the problem is solved by just talking to other people who emulate. On /vr/ we have /hhg/, on /vg/ there's /emugen/, and outside of that there's modern compilation releases made by the developers themselves that go against this. Chances are though if it's a rare or obscure system though most people are probably emulating anyway outside of five people who just want to feel more important than everybody else because they spent money on an old console.

The few who care about old games are more likely to play them on official compilations or something like NSO which I am perfectly fine with honestly. Really emulators and stuff like RetroArch are mainly for people who are really into retro games. Someone who plays mostly modern games wouldn't have as much of a reason to download a dedicated emulator on their phone or PC just to look at an old game for a few minutes. This is why I also like online emulators which are great for showing people an old game without making them download anything.

I like RetroArch personally, but for my friend who plays mostly Switch I would rather just buy a compilation so she can enjoy it on her modern console or send her a link where she can just play it in a browser

If you're on Android try Yaba Sanshiro 2 first for Saturn. Otherwise go for it, RetroArch is my primary choice for most consoles. Easier to appreciate if you have a TV setup.

Streaming stick of your choice + RetroArch + bluetooth or 2.4ghz retro controller (8bitdo, Retro-Bit, Hyperkin, etc). Bonus points if you get one for each console

There actually is an emulation general >>>/vg/441633365

I agree with >>10145409. But yeah later consoles you are better off sticking with standalone emulators. Even for N64 Mupen64Plus is probably better, ReDream for DC, standalone Dolphin for GCN/Wii, etc.

I haven't used PJ64 or VisualBoy Advance since like the 2000's. Same with bsnes.

The thought of using Windows for emulation nowadays is hilarious to me though. Literally just download RetroArch on your TV box lol
