People want Rinoa to be Ultimecia because they are desperately clamouring for any sort of depth in this game (same motive for Squall is dead). While I agree that it would make Ultimecia more interesting, you gotta ask whether it would actually make the story as a whole better?

It would make it worse and ruin the point. Final Fantasy VIII is a love story, one where Squall and Rinoa are both depicted as upstanding and mature people by the end; the moral of the story isn't that Rinoa becomes a codependent retard who tries to kill everybody in the universe so she can see Squall again, and then try to kill him.

Yesterday I decided to play through the original Final Fantasy, as I've been on a classic RPG roll. I gotta say, so far this is just awful. The southern cave area has numerous enemies that ambush nearly every encounter, and paralyze, so you start off fights with your damage dealers paralyzed. Who decided this was a good mechanic? Does the game get any less bullshit with it's encounters?
