Dude to deployment fuckery of that edition, the tau player could deploy wherever he wanted, cause there were no enemys on board. So tau guy deployed/spaced out kroot in the white scars zone, blocking off the table edge so he couldn't deploy at all.

I had ideas for new weapons for nids, one is basically a rifle shaped mini zoanthrope, designed for use by hive tyrants or "swarm lords" (that is the generic not single character revised version) basically a weapon to pump out psychic screams.

The other was a pistol shrimp claw designed to produced sonic blasts that could be used by warriors, hive guard and carnifexes.

I don’t really have an issue with characters like the Swarmlord in that like...

Non-synapse Nids clearly don’t contribute much if anything to the hive mind as an entity. They’re just meat puppets expressing it’s will when under synapse range.

The hive mind as a whole is clearly smart enough to be sentient, it just doesn’t have what you’d think of as mortal priorities.

And it multitasks through different nodes. When a zoanthrope spits mind plasma at you, that isn’t the sum totality of the hive mind’s attention turning on you, just that node. And just like with bodies, mental nodes are specialised.

Hive tyrants are “generals” in that they have excellent skillsets for directing a battle on their scale. The swarmlord has appeared across many different hive fleets and has been killed multiple times. Is it a “citizen” of the hive mind that survives it’s physical death and gets printed a new body? Possibly, but if so it hardly matters as it’s constantly uplinked to the hive mind and has no individuality beyond it’s function anyhow. The swarmlord is just a biomorph suited to counterplaying certain forms of hard resistance, nothing more, nothing less. If it is a reincarnated being, then so are all synapse creatures and that only matters in the sense that their gathered data is never lost by the singular but distributed entity they are all a part of.

Gav just made a large lore post about Abaddon and the Eye of Terror.

I summarised some of the lore points for you guys.

-Gav has a pet beef about the portrayal of some characters and factions that perpetuates that idea that they can follow Chaos without getting corrupted by it. He is not talking mutation, he means the corruption of the soul and morals. Such examples of this are Abaddon, the Night Lords, and the Iron Warriors.

-There is a misguided sense that these guys are traitors but not really Chaos traitors. The truth of the matter even if they don't worship the Dark Gods they are certainly touched by them.

-No matter how noble and self justified you start, The influence of Chaos will corrupt your morals and spirit. It will bend your ideals and worldview until ultimately it controls your actions.

-The corruption of these characters have started since the HH. It turned them into what the Chaos Gods wanted them to be. In the cosmic conflict between the Emperor and the Chaos Gods nobody can pick a neutral corner.

-Sometime there is whining about these characters losing agency and becoming just slaves to Chaos. Well, tough. That's what they get for dipping their toes in the pool. They get dragged in. Chaos is a drug. Once you take it, everything else seems pointless Ultimately, it will lead to damnation and the loss of self.

-Self delusion is the key word. No champion of Chaos recalls what their original goals were. They just believe that what they are now is what they always sought. The few that self reflect and discover the loss of their souls and mortal goals are driven to madness.

-Abaddon might resist the temptation of individual gods but he is inherently corrupt by the virture of dealing with Chaos. Reflecting on what was said above, what goals Abaddon set for himself might be his but ultimately they are just deceptions by the gods to complete his fall into being a Slave to Darkness.

-What Abaddon truly desires, whether it's to amass power for some unknown purpose or to topple the Emperor, might just be a hollow ambition. Just a ploy by the Chaos Gods to trick Abaddon into handing them the galaxy.

-Abaddon's Long War was launched as a rejection to Horus' haste in the HH. Where Horus was forced to make a swift bid to reach Terra before the cosmic clock ran out and he was overwhelmed by power, Abaddon is taking it slow.

-The Power of Abaddon is that he did not use Chaos as a replacement for mortal effort and toil. He accepted the power of Chaos but he would not use to avoid the time and sacrifice needed to achieve his goals. Through this Abaddon achieved the impossible. He harnessed the power of Chaos without being its pawn. He became a harmony of mortal goal and immortal power mixed together.

-Through his iron will he turned his corruption (His growing obsession with toppling the Emperor) into a weapon that serves his purpose. Rather than straying to grab greater power and dooming himself to becoming a slave to the gods, he channels the gifts of Chaos into achieving specific goals in the mortal realm. This is what makes him the greatest champion of the Chaos Gods and the greatest threat to the Imperium.

NIDS DON'T NEED NEW WEAPONS, THEY HAVE MORE THAN ENOUGH OPTIONS OVER THE EDITIONS AS LONG AS THE RULES ARE MADE VIABLE FOR ALL OF THEM. A GUN THAT SHOOTS PSYCHIC SCREAMS ISN'T NECESSARY WHEN THEY CAN ALREADY USE THE PSYCHIC SCREAM POWER, AS WELL. THESE ARE NEAT IDEAS BUT MORE SOMETHING I WOULD LEAVE UP TO YOUR PERSONAL HOMEBREW, NOT SOMETHING GOING INTO THE PROJECT. EVERY RULE, ABILITY, PIECE OF WARGEAR, AND SO ON THAT I ADD IN, WILL BE EITHER SOMETHING THAT EXISTED IN ANOTHER FORM IN ONE OF THE EXISTING 9 EDITIONS OF 40K, OR HAS SOME PRECEDENCE IN THE FLUFF, OR ANOTHER RELATED GAME SYSTEM LIKE BATTLEFLEET GOTHIC, NECROMUNDA, OR EPIC 40K. TRUST ME, THERE'S SO MUCH CONTENT ALREADY THERE, ACROSS 30 YEARS OF WHITE DWARF AND EVERYTHING ELSE, ALMOST NO ONE WILL LACK FOR OPTIONS, IT'S JUST A MATTER OF MAKING THEM ALL GOOD AND FUN TO USE.

Here is the summarised bullet points from Gav's Eye of Terror post :

-The Eye of Terror is an overlap between reality and the Warp. It's an ever shifting wound of wackiness and wizards did it. Whatever we want happens in there. Because it's not the raw Warp, whatever crazy stuff inside are real not just a human mind's interpretation.

-The Eye of Terror is a world of nightmares and dreams. It's mostly shaped by the thoughts and fears of mankind. As such all of mankind's dreams no matter how silly or lewd exist there smushed together without rhyme or reason.

-There are some persons with enough willpower and confidence to exert influence on Eye of Terror. Usually, these persons are Daemon Princes. Because of their connection to their gods these persons shape things in a stereotypical manner (skulls and brass for Khorne, crystals and mirrors for Tzeentch , etc). After all, the Chaos Gods know what they want and they don't go far from it.

-However, if a mortal with a strong yearning desires something then the Warp will answer. The iron Warriors will have their fortress and the Word Bearers will have their bone cathedrals, Note that the bone that makes up these cathedrals don't come from actual people. They aren't physical. They are just blobs of Warp stuff shaped by the whim and desire of the dreamer/imaginer.

-The stuff of a daemon world are just magical playdoh ripe for the shaping of the imaginer. Anything is possible, for the Warp will provide.

-There are actually stars and planets in the Eye of Terror but like anything touched by Chaos they are corrupted and twisted however they are still real. If for some reason, the Eye disappeared, these celestial objects will remain. Twisted and deformed but physical. The Warp can change the physical but it cannot turn itself physical nor can it turn the physical permanently immaterial.

-Souls are Warp energy. They don't exist in the Warp. They are the Warp. They are smushed together pieces of Warp energy that temporarily attach themselves to a material body.

-The souls are not physical. They are energy. They can be harnessed to birth a Chaos God, become a daemon, or create a world. Souls are the playdoh used to fashion the vistas and structures within the Eye of Terror. Souls are power.

-Daemons can't actually exist in the Materium. Their energy bleeds back into the Warp. They need energy from the Warp to sustain themselves in Real Space. However, in an overlap between the Warp and Real Space, they can exist indefinitely. Their mock-bodies connected and sustained by the Warp. Perhaps the same can be said about the human souls that somehow retain their sentience in the Warp. After all, a human soul in the Warp is like less harmless daemon. Maybe it could manifest a mock body for itself, manifest as a ghost, etc.

-Possession in the Eye of Terror is widespread but mortals are also empowered there. Their imagination, ambition, and independence are their greatest weapons. It's like being inside the Matrix and being able see the code. A mortal can grasp the Warp energy and shape it with thought into being real.

-But there is a danger in mortals shaping the Warp with their minds. One random thought or daydreaming can suddenly be turned real. You could be strangled by your own shadow or suffer a gruesome fate.

-Within the Webway, there are beings that are neither of the Warp or Realspace that were created by the collapse of the Aeldari Empire. These beings are feared by mortal and demon alike. Examples of these beings are the Black Library Guardians and the souls of the Solitaires.

-Gav wants to set one of the Phoenix Lord novels almost wholly on a Crone World. He likes that idea.

Big Es ideals of authority building a utopia don't work because of humanitys inherent flaws, which is why we're the race most susceptible to chaos - because chaos is created and maintained mostly by humanity.

>>73808018
>>73808106
KEEP IN MIND ANYTHING I TALK ABOUT FOR THIS PROJECT IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE IF IT DOESN'T MAKE FOR A GOOD GAME. I'M OPTIMISTIC THOUGH.

RIGHT NOW IT ACTUALLY DOES WORK MORE LIKE ALTERNATE PHASES. IT'S BASED ON RULES SIMILAR TO THE ORIGINAL EPIC SPACE MARINE FROM THE 80S MIXED WITH THE RECENT 2019 VERSION OF APOCALYPSE. BASICALLY, YOU GIVE ORDERS AT THE START OF YOUR TURN (NORMAL ORDERS ARE: RUN - ADVANCE - HOLD; SPECIAL ORDERS: RALLY - FALL BACK - OVERWATCH), THEN RESOLVE LIKE SO:

1ST PLAYER MAKES ALL FALLBACK MOVES / 2ND PLAYER MAKES ALL FALLBACK MOVES
1ST PLAYER MAKES ALL RUN & CHARGE MOVES / 2ND PLAYER DOES THE SAME
1ST PLAYER MAKES NORMAL MOVES / 2ND PLAYER
1ST PLAYER SHOOTS WITH STATIONARY UNITS / 2ND PLAYER
1ST PLAYER SHOOTS WITH UNITS THAT MOVED / 2ND PLAYER
1ST PLAYER PICKS A CLOSE COMBAT TO RESOLVE / 2ND PLAYER / ALTERNATE

THERE'S NO FIGHTING FIRST OR SECOND LIKE IN 8TH EDITION BECAUSE IT USES 2ES COMBAT SYSTEM SO ALL COMBAT RESOLUTION IS SIMULTANEOUS.

THERE ARE ALSO STRATAGEMS TO INTERRUPT THE ORDER, REACTION TESTS FOR THINGS LIKE COUNTERCHARGING WITH SPACE WOLVES, OR GOING TO GROUND FOR A COVER BONUS WHEN YOU GET SHOT, AND THINGS LIKE OVERWATCH THAT CAN REACT TO ENEMY MOVEMENT JUST AS IN 2E.

I'M EXPLAIN IN MORE DETAIL LATER, BUT I'D SAY GIVE IT A SHOT BEFORE YOU KNOCK IT. REMEMBER PRIESTLEY AND CHAMBERS WHO WROTE 40K 2ND EDITION HAVE BOTH GONE ON TO MAKE GAMES USING ALTERNATE ACTIVATIONS SINCE THEY LEFT GW.

THERE'S A BIG DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WHAT THE HIERODULE IS, AND WHAT IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE.

GOING OFF OF EPIC 40K, A HIERODULE IS WAS MORE LIKE A WARHOUND OR REAVER TITAN AND HIEROPHANTS WERE THE WARLORDS. BOTH OF THEM WOULD EASILY FLATTEN AN ENTIRE LANCE OF KNIGHTS.

THEY'VE OBVIOUSLY GONE DOWN IN WEIGHT CLASS SINCE THEN, BUT EVEN STILL A HIEROPHANT IS LIKE A WARHOUND TITAN AND THAT MAKES HIERODULES EASILY A MATCH FOR A KNIGHT.

He is constantly being described as being younger than, and less experienced than the other captains and chapter masters among the Last Wall, to the point that he has to alternate between kissing ass and stepping to the Templars in order to muster the respect needed to let him lead them

Cool lore. Almost always the least fun faction to play against in literally every edition due to bullshit like the old serpent shields, stacked negative to hit modifiers, seer councils rerolling 2++s.

Chaos is already anti-chaos with the infighting, but that is barely explored.
Chaos is also largely orderly and well-confined and defined.
Sons of Malice at least change things up. And here is the actual hipster opinion but the big 4 only worked during the more campy earlier days of 1st and 2nd editions and they largely suck now. The void between them should've been filled with lesser gods embodying certain several aspects of bigger gods or some other concepts that dont quite fit in.

many great crusade era space marines were/are just psychopathic, sadistic killer men given great powers to begin with and that's still the same kind stock current marines are recruited from although they become much more stable through their ascension to the emperor's angels of death. for me a space marine of any era or loyalty represents a man as a perfect weapon of WAR.

i think in some of the HH novels the real difference between, say, the world eaters and space wolves is debated because they are mostly the same. who gives a shit about damnation if you can do your job (ie. warfare and killing) better?

All marines should be roughly equal. If primaris need to be differentiated you can do it by a 6+fnp on the last wound. The better question is if loyalists should be the ones following legion tactics with one loadout squads and chaos the mixed weapons or the other way around.

As for the activation, maybe resolve damage at the end of the battle round like apoc so it matter less who goes first? Since everything happens roughly simultaneously.

I think the most important thing about this is that it proves the idea of 40k "lore" existing as a monolithic entity entirely wrong.

Much of this post directly contradicts the similar lore-dumping of ADB and others. Key authors all have their own personal interpretation of events, and this has been the case all through the many decades of 40ks existence. There have been different writing teams contradicting one another, writers changing and contradicting previous codexes or works in newer ones, and even strong tonal divides between different divisions of GW (compare an Imperial Armour volume to a HH Black Library book). 40k, as a setting, has experienced the death of the author. Arguably, it never really had one to begin with. In such a situation, the reader is the ultimate arbiter of their own cannon. Any attempt to find the "politics" or "meaning" of Warhammer is redundant, because the setting is just a Rorschach test that spits out what you put in.

40k canon gets as far as the models on the tabletop, and even that is an ever-changing (and maybe inaccurate) reflection of what's meant to be going on. Past that, everything is just a sea of uncertain themes and aesthetics that you must draw your own conclusions from.

tl:dr politicsfags and "loremasters" are smoothbrains.

Actually, Laurie Goulding who was an editor of both said that FW books are written by an in-verse character. A historian assigned to write the events of the HH by Malcador. That character actually appears in one short story of the HH. He is supposed to be an avatar of the late Alan Bligh.

BL HH books are written from the PoV of the people that were actually there.

It's not official, just someones drawing of what it would probably look like.
The magazines are kinda idiotic.
Also, I gotta correct what I said, a Hydraphant never existed as official model, but it did theoretically considering GWs downsizing of Biotitans after the second edition with the release of the FW Hierodule, which is much much smaller than the old version which is actually the same size and more similiar in looks to the FW Hierophant.
So that makes the old Epic Hierophant an Hydrophant by current Biotitan sizes and the FW Hierophant a Hierodule.
Pic related, Hierophant on the left next to a Hierodule on the left with Carnifexes and a Tyrant in front of them.
GWs scaling randomness always gives me a headache.

I think that more adds to my point - while the sources don't directly contradict, it embodies a very different philosophy when it comes to the trust the author wants us to place in their writing. I think the attitude of IA is also reflected in their treatment of the 40k books - compare the tone of Vigilus to something like Anphelion Project. The variation in how 40k is written isn't just in the literal events, but also extends to what the writer thinks the setting is about and should be presented.

Spicy leak from Black Library, m8s. Looks like we're getting a short story about the Sororitas Order responsible for looking after the Sororitas doves:

> The Order Avarium is prestigious amongst the Orders of the Adepta Sororitas. It is their Empror-given mandate to breed the finest doves in the Imperium, beautiful and majestic and fit for both ceremony and the battlefield. The Orders Militant hold them in especially high regard for their fearless war-doves.

> Sister Rostro, a Superior within the Order Avarium, is faced with a problem: one of her finest doves was killed, and the killer was clearly a war-dove. Even worse, she has come to suspect the influence of Chaos upon her flock. Further complicating matters, a Canoness from a Militant Order shall be arriving soon to collect an contingent of war-doves, and shall surely purge Sister Rostro's entire aviary if she suspects corruption.

> Sister Rostro shall have to use all of her knowledge of doves if she stands a chance of uncovering the murder-dove and any chaotic corruption, before it is too late...

>>73809248
The obnoxious over-use ofe the word “wolf” is a translation error for fenrisian words that have no equivalent in gothic.

The 1000 man limit on chapters was not and is not used as a hard limit. RG implemented it as a barrier in the sense that chapter masters would be restricted in how they would allocate and control manning numbers as an organization.

So, there are no more than 1000 marines under the direct control of the chapter in a battle ready status at any given time. SM transiting combat zones, in a rest and refit status or seconded to another command do not count. Excess personnel are placed in an inactive status until needed. As such, there may be only 1000 marines “on the rolls” so to speak, but many thousands more in the background.

Basically, the 1000 man limit was placed to limit a Chapter command’s power, not to directly limit staffing.

I have more:
There are also many, many exceptions to the limit granted in the codex. A Chapter Master makes extensive use of them to meet the 40k levels of ridiculous conflict. The Administratum inspects these exceptions, but rarely take issue with it as they are almost always needed. After all, the point of the limit was to prevent another horus heresy, and they don’t want a chapter to build. Massive fucking army for no reason. This ensures that chapters are as big as they need to be; no more, no less. If a chapter needs 10,000 marines, and the CM ensures that no more than 1000 are at the direct command of any given commander, and there is sufficient justification, then 10,000 marines it is. Likewise, if the chapter finds itself over strength, it will reduce recruiting until numbers fall to the previous numbers.

This has led to the popular misconception that all chapters are only 1000 marines. Many in fact are, as most chapters exist for specific purposes and 1000 is enough, and is indeed the minimum end strength as dictated by the codex astartes

The Emperor's treatment of Angron proves that Erda was right. Angron should never have been put in charge of his legion. The Emperor could have let Angron die the death that he wanted or he could have put Angron in stasis until the Nails were removed.

The Emperor wanted to get some use out of XII, even if it was only a few decades, and XII's feelings on the matter were of no consequence to him. He forced Angron to be a war machine, knowing that it would be a hellish slow death. His only plan for Angron was to have Russ put him down if the Nails sent him mad before they killed him.

Erda wasn't wrong about the Emperor. Her mistake was losing control of where they were sent.

But they just yeet their way though everything between thunder hammers, melta guns and/or auto canons. Pic related is just afvter they voiped down and deleted my morkanaught. The game actually ended in turn 5 on a tie. At the end of that turn all I had was 30 boys vs njal, ragnard and like 6-7 terminators. Had there been a turn 6 I would have been fucked.

Lack of imagination, and a faction that is fairly limited in scope to begin with.

Ministorum militia would be cool, even if mechanically they wouldn't be much different from chaos cultists. The triumph of st. katherine is a cute idea, but would be better served as a generic relic procession option for every order rather than a "character". Beyond that all I can really think of is celestians that are proper, artificer-clad melee units, rather than hodgepodge melee+shoot units.

Anyways sisters don't need much. The army has more or less been "fine" since the 3e additions to it. Now give me more scions GW.

1.) A massive treaded cathedral the size of a baneblade with a ridiculous amount of firepower with priests and sisters screaming from every pulpit

2.) chaff infantry in the form of enraged locals, desperate pilgrims, or flagellants. Basically ministorum cultists.

3.) A unit of minor living saints with buffed stats and powerful abilities in both shooting and close combat. Basically “good” possessed but with sisters.

3.) A “tank destroyer” with a collossal fucking melta gun, which can be switched out with a massive flamer or avenger bolt cannon.

Angron demanded to be sent back. It's pretty much the first thing he said.

>they couldn't remove the nails
They could have put him in stasis though. Don't sidestep it, you know I'm right. It worked with Guilliman. If the Emperor gave a shit whether Angron lived or died then he wouldn't have chose to wring a few decades of fighting out of his brain-damaged son. He had alternatives even if the Nails couldn't be removed at the time.

what does that have to do with the price of soap? if your son was like "fuck off dad I want to go die" would you give him a gun?

>They could have put him in stasis though. Don't sidestep it, you know I'm right. It worked with Guilliman.
it worked for guilliman with eldar witchcraft millenia afterwards. additionally, who is to say that the emperor wouldn't have put angron in stasis after the end of the great crusade?

>Horus turned because of his own pride and because he feared the Emperor would do the Astartes like he did the Thunder Warriors.
no, horus turned because while wounded by a weapon brought against him by those who were already traitors, he was shown false visions of another future by the chaos gods to trick him into bringing about those visions
if erda hadn't fucked it up, lorgar would never have turned, and erebus and kor phaeron wouldn't have been in position to do what they did (because they'd just be nobodies on colchis)

the emperor's handling of angron was wrong, and frankly bizzare considering we know him to be more intelligent than that. it's entirely incongruous with how he treated his other sons. it's also stupid that angron was in the position he was; being the only primarch that couldn't conquer his adoptive home planet.
but at the end of the day, angron turning traitor only happened because Erda fucked up, and even if the Emperor hadn't fucked up with angron, the other legions would still have turned.

Be a real man, play actual Warhammer rules, don't play some shit compromise. If you want 8000 points of shit, be ready to move, shoot, and charge with 8000 points, including waiting for your opponent to do the same with his 8000. If you can't handle this, and you don't have the days required to do this, then don't play Apocalypse.

Also, moving and shooting should be one unit moves, opponent moves, alternating until every unit in all armies move. Same for shooting. This slows down the game but having 1/4th of your shit nuked before you have even moved and shot one unit.
