>> No.56769123

ok, here's my thoughts.

19boys go with the warboss in a 'ard case battle wagon. Nobs race alongside them in the trukk. The ammo runts are there to take wounds when the truck gets blown to fuck.

2 mobs of 30 boys on foot, get teleported by the weirdboy

both squads of stormboys also race up the field, your goal is to hit as manything AT THE SAME time as possible, this will reduce return fire when your opponant needs to pull something out of combat.

Kommandos only show up when you think something else is gonna charge teh same turn, they're garbage in that low number so use them to assist or go after a backline sniper unit.

painboy and waaagh banner just stay near the blob as best they can to assist.

tankbustas ride in the big trakk, target vehicles, duh.

have fun, I did have to stretch a bit to hit 2k. Things I would do:
flesh out the stormboy units, they're cheap and good.
maybe boost the size of the nob unit? a box of nobs would help your army in general just for bits and squad leaders.
maybe duplicate the kommandos? double your chances of them making that charge

Kannons hit whatever you need them to

don't forget to have fun!

>> No.56769129

Ork player who needed help with list building here.
How's this look? Plan is to use the trukk with ghazzy, the big mek, the painboy and nob to get up close, with the battlewagons following. Tankbustas ride with the big trak, while the weirdboy deepstrikes grots for shiggles. Stormboyz go and wreak things.

This list looks like shit.

Remove Ghazzy. I love the model but he's just too many points for what he does.
The Grots are useless too.
Your heavies are shit too.
Painboy isn't as good as he seems. Only positive side of him is he heals characters but even then it's pointless.

Make both squads of stormboyz 30 and get Boss Zug to go with them. You can probably fit a third squad to have it as a outrider detachment.

Make your tankbusters 12 models and stick them in the truck.

Make your boyz shootas. I know Orks have shit shooting but having 3 squads of 30 boyz will get you 60 shots. You can add another weirdboy and have him know warpath so you give warpath then da jump. Teleport 30 boys 9 inches from an enemy, shoot 60 shots into the second closest enemy then charge the closest one. With the new dakka dakka dakka thing you'll get statistically 6-7 extra shots and an extra couple of wounds in too. Then a 48% chance of charging the first squad. You have the chance of killing two squads in one turn with one squad.
The waaagh!!! banner won't be good if you're teleporting niggas around the field.
There's some people who swear by the kustom forcefield but I found it to be very lacking in my games. Especially when I had to teleport my guys everywhere. Give him the Shokk attack gun instead. It'll give you some extra stuff to deal with heavies. Try to see if you can add some dakkajets or mek gunz with smasher gunz as well.

People will either focus their fire on the dakkajets or mek gunz first since they assume those are the bigger threats. You Mek can repair the gunz and if they're shooting at your jets you won't need to worry about them shooting at your boyz. Line up your mek gunzs to take up as much space as possible to just make it impossible to go anywhere on the board without being hit. Advance and charge your stormboyz. You want to make turn one charges. Especially if you go turn one. The less shooting the enemy can do the better off you'll be.

Buy a get started kit and a melee specialist for your army if the starter kit didn't have one (this is true for admech, so grab some fulgurites or dragoons).
You'll need it to intercept or block enemy melee units.
Consider point efficiency before buying a unit to avoid getting stomped.

Buy GW paints, don't buy GW brushes.

Blue-tack is handy for holding fiddly bits in place for painting.

The old writers are the ones that created the 40k setting to begin with - the modern ones are glorified fanfiction writers who fuck with an established thing to make it more to their tastes.

I used to think that the Imperium was utterly grimderp and full of complete morons. Then I realized that almost all of it is the Emperor's own stupid fault. Even putting aside the "he treated his sons like crap, thus setting up the Heresy" business... he expanded the Imperium much too fucking quickly, leaving it with far more territory than it could reliably defend, and as a bonus, promoted godawful FTL technology that can get your entire ship eaten if the Warp feels like it. As such, the Imperium is a logistical nightmare that can barely run, and it's very fortunate to only have enemies that are too small, disorganized, or both to ever take it on as an equal; the Imperium would fold like paper against a rival galactic power of comparable size but better logistics.

That's the only FTL technology that was in the setting, dumbass. Is absolutely retarded, because the whole reason those other races which don't have Imperial-style FTL are small and disorganized is BECAUSE THEY DONT HAVE IMPERIAL STYLE FTL, you cannot simultaneously be as big as the Imperium and have better logistics. Many of the Tech-Priests saw the Emperor as nothing less than a manifestation of the Omnissiah, for his knowledge was unmatched by mortal kind. Thus, with the agreement to serve alongside the Emperor, was the Mechanicum born. They traded weaponry and starships for technology and Navigators so they could once more travel deep into space, continuing their search for knowledge. When the Emperor led his Space Marine Legions on their Great Crusade, the armies of the Cult Mechanicus marched alongside, and as the Imperium expanded, so too did the Mechanicum, claiming many new worlds to be turned into forge worlds like Mars. It is a relationship that continues to this day. Every weapon used by the armies of Mankind can trace its origin to a forge world of the Mechanicum.

>Since this alliance was forged, the goals of the Adeptus Mechanicus have changed little. Their pact with the Imperium often sees their forces battling alongside the Astra Militarum, Adeptus Astartes, or any of the other factions of the forces of the Imperium, but the warriors of the Omnissiah also have their own imperatives to follow.

Something like that. They're a neotenic species, which means they don't undergo metamorphosis like most frogs or salamanders even into adulthood, so they're kind of a grown-up tadpole. However, injecting them with certain substances can induce the production of the relevant hormones, leading them to metamorphose into something very like one of their cousin salamanders. I decently like parts of their lore, like Exarchs being those that were "Lost" to their super-passionate-eldar-drives and then being excluded from their spirit-soup-circuits, but also responsible for training other Eldar and trying to teach them not to become Lost.
I like space elves.

Idea for an Apocalypse game: There are 12 objectives scattered around the table, numbered 1-6(so two per number)

Team draw Tactical Objectives as normal, and can score them as normal. However, rather than produce Victory Points, the Tactical Objectives produce Command Points.

Reasoning: Tactical Objectives is a fun mechanic that encourages mobility and dynamic play rather than parking lots. However, making the entire game about that might not be the best in Apocalypse, since Apoc should be about dramatic confrontations rather than a gradual accumulating score.

At the same time, Apoc is Open Play, so there's no detachments to generate CP, but people like using Stratagems. Making Tactical Objectives generate CP is good because it doesn't give a huge advantage to one army(No Guard spamming 10 brigades to get 90 CP) it rewards you for good performances over the course of the game, and it makes the battle feel big because you'll have several individual skirmishes happening.

Two of each objective is because I'm planning to run this with three boards pushed together, so a 12'x6' board, and we want there to be several possibilities for victory. If you get "Secure Objective 3" and it's deep in the enemy deployment zone, who cares? The alternative would be to make it so objectives can't be placed in either player's deployment zone.

>Also, Riptides were OP, Tau were merely good.
I kinda want to get this mentality out that having a single Riptide is "OP". It's not. They're the Tau's TEQ. It's fair if they can have one if you bring some Termies or a Land Raider. If they bring multiple and in the Wing, then yes that is pretty cheesy.

Also Kroot are shit. They're just expendable meatshields. Having a whole army oriented around them would be incredibly boring. If Tau auxiliaries had the same love that Genestealers then that would be fine.

A "fun" army to play against is something that tries to bring all the neat units into the battle in a combined arms fashion. Not just spamming any one single unit. A good Tau player would know that some well supported fire warrior unit is a cheaper and arguably better source of anti infantry fire power than the other units.

I'm so tired of hearing non Tau players complain about "muh Battlesuits or muh Riptides" They're there in the codex, they have a purpose, just like the FWs.source then any of the battle suits. Just because you get butthurt at the cheesemongers doesn't mean that the other Tau players have to stop using a particular unit. Quit bitching.

Heavy Support
2 Max strength devastator squads, 1 with heavy bolters, the other with plasma cannons

My opponent had
A Swarmlord, Tyrant, Tervigon, Broodlord, 9 warriors, 20 'stealers, 30 melee gaunts, and 40-50 shooter gaunts separated into 2 units.

The mission was Deadlock, and the deployment Spearhead Assault

I deployed my guys mostly clustered around my HQ choices for the AoE buffs they provided, but ended up posting the 2 sniper squads on the flanks up in towers, and the other scout squad pretty far forward to act as a magnet/speed bump. I also deployed my tac squad as far up as I could, hoping to use them to tie up on of my opponent's melee units

My opponent deployed his warriors on one flank, his termigaunts on the other with the tervigon behind them, and everything else pretty much right up the center.

Well for situations specifically like that you would first nerf the problem unit like magnus but only as much as you think you need to. No broad stroke nerfs or you end up with the commissar and Conscript issue where they go from OP to underwhelming. You then take a look into the reason why the army itself doesn't get any play and fix that. i personally don't know what TS problems are. Turn 1

He had first turn thanks to having fewer units, but I managed to seize with a lucky roll.

Movement phase:
I shuffle my speed bump scout team up a little bit to get the shotgun and pistols within range of his swarmlord, which he decided to spearhead his melee forces. Moved my Talon up the required minimum 20 inches. Moved my dread up to claim an objective.

My powers would have been useless, so I skipped the psychic phase

End up wasting all the shots from the 15 scouts to try to hurt it, but he made every single roll. In hindsight, I could have shot at pretty much anything else and it would have been better. The talon had much better results, practically mulching the 20 mad genesteallers with it's assault cannon and frag missiles. The forward Tactical squad fired the plasma shots and frag missile at the swarmlord, but to no avail. The bolters from the squad helped hose the genestealers as well and picked off a couple more models. Farther back, the devestator squads helped with the stealers and the brood lord. By the end of my shooting, I took a couple wounds off the broodlord and reduced the stealer unit down to 2 models.

Tyranids turn 1

Moving up his horde, a single volley from his termigaunts wiped the forward scout squad out in one go. On top of that, on the far side, he managed to take out a sniper scout with his warriors and another with the tyrant's gun.

Melee phase
He charged in his hermigaunts to my forward tactical squad, losing a couple of bodies to overwatch. Thanks to a poor charge roll, he was only able to get 11 models into attack range, killing 2 of my men. My return attack killed something like 6 or 7. Thanks to everything else being out of range, that was the only melee that turn.

Alright, I’m looking to start a new army this holiday season, and I’m torn between a few:

-tau (cool models but a heavy stigma)
-eldar (a few cool models, and less of a stigma)
-GSC (cool models, but play like shite)
-guard (don’t like Cadians much and steel legion is metal)
-slaanesh (probably EC, but daemons are cool too)
-nids (like the fluff, neither here nor there on the models)

O e solution is to get the new GSC box and then grab a guard SC and Nids SC

>> No.56772299

But if you do that you'll probably just end up making them even more powerful in a soup army, rather than buffing their ability to be used on their own. Think about it this way, if someone asked you whether or not they should balance primaris so that you could run an all primaris army you would probably say no, because using only half of your codex is not going to be good. You can then think of soups as the "real" codex this edition, if you're using only part of what's available to you you can't expect to do well. There's no way to simultaneously balance the codexes alongside the "real" codexes, which are the soups.

>> No.56772311

I've been planning a rather simple campaign for 4-6 players.

The idea was simple: The whole campaign is divided into self-contained chapters that anyone could play in about a month. That way we have nice starting and stopping points for players who gain or lose interest in the game.

First Battle is a "Skirmish" of <=1000 points that gives a bonus to the 2nd battle.

The 2nd, 3rd, and 4th battles are opportunities to stack bonuses for the final battle. 1500-2000 points.

The 5th Battle decides the victor of the chapter and can have anywhere between 2500-3000 points. These are the true apocalypse battles and their's only one per month.

This was made in 7E before 8th hit and fucked everything up. But at least now we have planetstrike rules and other such missions to help build a fair campaign.

8th 5th were the only remotely good editions as far as core rulesets go. 5th had less power creep than 6th or 7th, it's just that all competitive aspects of the game literally died in sixth so it was harder to tell.

8th is by far the best core ruleset the games had, even though there's some terrible stuff in there. Depower mortal wounds, reintroduce vehicle wrecks, and get rid of random charge distances and it'll be golden. It'll still have alpha strike issues, but thats just due to absurdly undercosted shooting units and reliable turn one assaults, which isn't the rulesets problem.

2nd was incredible in some ways and utterly untenable by today's standards in others. Solid love for that edition still among the old greybeards who played it.

3rd/4th was best for lore and had some of the best codexes. The rules were good but not amazing.

5th was where everything started going to shit.

6th was shit on top of shit. It's lows weren't as bad as those of 7th but it didn't have any real highs to make up for it either.

7th was the utter shitholiest shitstain of pure shit to ever disgrace the game outside of doing a few neat things like bringing back Genestealer Cults, finally giving AdMech a real playable army, and bringing back Legion rules for Chaos. But most people still consider it rock bottom. Anyone who says otherwise is a faggot who shouldn't be trusted or played with, they're probably a Taudar loving cockmongler.

Turn 2

I shuffled a couple guys forward to get the bolter marines in the devastator squads into range, and that's about it.

Psychic phase
My librarian throws smite and psychic scourge at the hermigaunt squad, netting a cool 6 kills.

Shooting phase:
My guys in melee get a volley of shots off thanks to their pistols, and manage to pop a few more gaunts. Between shooting from my sniper teams and heavy bolters courtesy of my devastators, the broodlord and his last two offspring are no more. Overcharging the plasma cannons on the other squad and pouring fire from the Talon takes the swarmlord from full health down to about 4 I think. Finally in range, my dread makes a small contribution taking off another wound from swarmy.

Melee phase
My tacticals pick up a few more kills, endure the return attack without a loss, then attack again when I used the strategem Honour the Chapter, bringing the gaunts down to 8 models.

Tyranids turn 2

His warriors kill another scout from their side of the table, the termigaunts kill 2 from the other flank. Saving the other half of their shots, they helped the tyrant drop my Talon down to 4 wounds.

At that point, the game was tied. I had 5 victory points from claiming objectives, and my opponent also had 5, 4 from objectives and 1 from First Blood. We had to finish unfortunately though, because the store had like 10 minutes till closing and we had to pack up. If we were able to play it out to it's entirety, things would have been a lot different. Swarmy would have entered combat with my tactical squad which would have probably melted them. It'd give me a chance to fire on it with everything else and probably drop it, but now I'd be a lot more open, especially when his melee warriors closed in. On top of the, the 120 shot horde of gaunts moving in would've dropped more of my guys.
All in all, it was a pretty fun match, but it would have been nice if I was able to use the other two thirds of what was on the field.

Alpha strike will always be a problem as long as 40k remains IGOUGO.

The biggest most fundamental change it needs to make to become a really good game system by today's standards is some form of alternate activation system.
