Remember, while we currently dote on our pets, most domestic pets began as a symbiotic relationship of mutual exploitation.
So, look for roles or duties humans will want to hand off to something else, and find an animal (usually ones with social tendencies) which can be domesticated to fit that role.
"I'm lazy and I want to get small stuff from across the room" -- Capuchin Monkey.
"There are disease-riddled rodents eating our stored foods" -- Cats
"It's too easy for predators to sneak up on us at night, and we could really use something that runs faster than us to help move livestock where we want them." -- Wolves/Dogs
It's a trend.
