Giant spiders.

-They can clog up pressure plates with webbing so you and your party don't get torn apart by traps.

-Can climb on walls and ceilings, allowing them to scout ahead since they're pretty good at staying hidden.

-Can paralyze most enemies with venom which can help if you want some them alive.

-Are good at ambushing enemies while they're focused on you and/or the party.

-Are adorable and like to jump on people to show affection.

Spiders can be real bros given the chance.

Remember, while we currently dote on our pets, most domestic pets began as a symbiotic relationship of mutual exploitation.

So, look for roles or duties humans will want to hand off to something else, and find an animal (usually ones with social tendencies) which can be domesticated to fit that role.

"I'm lazy and I want to get small stuff from across the room" -- Capuchin Monkey.

"There are disease-riddled rodents eating our stored foods" -- Cats

"It's too easy for predators to sneak up on us at night, and we could really use something that runs faster than us to help move livestock where we want them." -- Wolves/Dogs

It's a trend.

A car whose purring will make any creature fall asleep, and seldom registers as hostile to other animals

Owlbear blocking your path?

The cat trots over,.Climbs on its back and starts purring.

Almost immediately the owlbear will lay down and fall asleep. Works well with humanoids as well. Creatures must make a will save to attempt to harm the cat. Creatures must make a will save to resist falling asleep. Creatures immune to sleep will be fascinated with the cat for as long as it deigns to cuddle and purr with them. Excellent therapy tool, can put insomniacs to sleep or sooth the hysterical

Mostly because owls are birds of prey that can and will kill and eat crows if given a chanse. However, they're nocturnal so they aren't likely to attack crows during the day. So if crows encounter one during the day they'll harass it, knowing that it'll probably just leave to find another place to sleep in, rather than try to kill them.
With diurnal birds of prey, they'll just make loud noises to warn other crows and keep a safe distance, since going close to one is likely to end badly.

to be serious about your question, I'm guessing you're looking for some non standards? because dogs, cats, ferrets and such are all normal.

Giant terrestrial Isopods would be cool. and centipedes. like, have a character find an egg from a giant centipede and then it hatches and has absurd loyalty to the player. snails are cool, but not in a RP way. Newts and Salamanders would be pretty neat if done right. that's about all I have that isn't normal.
