Suggestions from last thread

Caverns and labyrinths are too generic for geography, some phenomenon a little too "duh"

Geography: Maybe the ever rare divine 'adamantine' veins like in dworf fort (with the waiting demons not far underneath) or rune "stone" a metal with a very malleable poetic name allowing greater changes to it and the world close to it or gems of mystic power and might with strange properties without even enchanting it.

Phenomanon: Volcanic fire-troll births, dispersing great ore into the world anew or, strange "storms" attacking large caverns with radiant inner poem changing radiance, maybe assorted storms with anything from undead raising properties (like hostile drauger things) to raining nutritional ale or, maybe fey moods that overtake the dwarves that inspire them to build items beyond even the grandest of conduits and mortals with even nonsensical and strange materials and poetic natures, always coming out as nigh undestroyable, vastly powerful and mystical/strange items.

Some cute crazy cultist is funding this little journey and coming along since every good party needs a white mage. Don't have to worry about her being frail since her love for me keeps her pushing forward, did I mention she's cute? Sadly it appears someone else grabbed the cash but I was in it to become grossly incandescent so I'm fine with that. Write-Fagging:

"After acquiring the information about the cursed treasure-hunter, I came to quickly decide that I needed to act. There might be a fair share of expeditions in the future, but someone capable of putting all this information together would be invaluable as an ally, and thus could not be allowed to perish.

I found a contact that was more than happy to go along with this, as long as I would make certain that the rest of the illegal drugs at the site would be destroyed as well. To be safe, the whole safehouse would have to be blown up. Thankfully its in Kansas' more rural area, so it shouldn't harm any innocent people.

10 Million USD worth of treasure isn't anything to scoff at either, but the real treasure would be the cure for the curse that the one that acquired all the necessary information to begin with had contracted. With the treasure hunter healed, more expeditions could take place in the future.

I found a number of interesting people willing to work together on this, though a bit of a careless word with the doctor got me a palmprint aching on my cheek for a few days time, but thankfully it was cleared up as an honest mistake and an apology was accepted.

I managed to strike up a bit of a friendship with these people and look forward to the next journey, and given that none of them had anything to complain about the money they received, an equal share to each on completion, I think they're happy enough.

We had a close call when a vial of dangerous disease sample broke during our mission, almost killing all of us, but thankfully our doctor's quick thinking had us come out with little more than a nasty chill and a good reminder of what kind of sick people we are dealing with."

>> No.39045652

>>39045638

"Still, there's several other treasures to look for, I had hoped some of them might be found in the vault as there was indication the people behind the cure were at least aware of these other treasures, perhaps a good reason why they kept holding onto the cure, perhaps intent on bargaining for the remaining information from the one who had put it all together before, in exchange for their life.

Nevertheless, I am intent on setting out to the next journey soon, and we'll have all of these treasures claimed in time. With friends like these, it ought to be possible, though I will admit I hoped to find the key to immortality here.

Perhaps in time, and if we do, we'll have to study the sample a few years undoubtedly but if it can be copied... all of us treasure hunters will have it... but the secret shall be ours. Too many immortals would only mean trouble.

The Ouroboros Society plans for the next expedition, and with every step along the way, we shall be growing stronger and stronger..."

Thanks for writefriending, this was an enjoyable read!

I liked the number 1300 for the width. 1200 for the text/image body is a nice even number for division by 2 or 3, and that left me 50 pixels on either side as a buffer.
Why do you ask? Is there a viewing problem on your end?

>> No.39048324

>>39048264
Ignore what people say about width. Designing something properly has nothing to do with always making your CYOAs 1200px wide. Really, that's just a way for accommodating people with shit resolution screens. Making your stuff 1200px wide becomes bothersome for those with bigger resolutions. The important thing is scaling--make sure your stuff is legible to both lower and higher resolutions.

I don't agree that there should be one fixed optimal width for all CYOAs. Not only does that feel unnecessarily restrictive from a creative perspective, but I don't really understand the rationale behind the number itself. Why 1200 specifically? Why isn't 1300 fine?

>>39048349
Anything legible is fine. Preferably sans-serif, in a nice 12 or 14 point font for normal text body. Honestly I feel like it doesn't matter too much as long as it's easy to read and thematically consistent.

Because 95% of people have a screen that's wide enough to display an image with a width of 1200. If you went down to 1000 it would be 99%. If you go up to 1600 (another width that's considered acceptable by some) it's less than 50%.

1200 fits most screen resolutions, so it's a good stable resolution to start with. But like I said in >>39048324 it shouldn't exactly judge how you design your CYOA. 1200 is the minimum to work with, so more advanced designers should strive to make something that can be read at that resolution but can also be read at higher resolutions. People shouldn't have to resize your CYOA to read it. Focus on scaling.

>> No.39048665

>>39048432
>>39048503
Like I said, I don't believe in imposing one single "optimal" width for all CYOAs. For me at least, CYOAs are about creativity, the play of ideas, and all the fun of imaginary worlds and situations without necessarily all the rigor of a fully-realized system. As such, I love discovering CYOAs in new and interesting formats, and I think I would lose a little bit of that joy if every CYOA I ever saw was 1200 pixels wide. Obviously, CYOAs need to be legible too, but that doesn't mean that we need to impose highly strict and specific standards on image dimensions.

Creativity is linked with image width because image width is one factor in determining the format and layout of your CYOAs.

In any case, I have gotten very few (maybe none?) visibility complaints about any of my CYOAs until now. Most of my CYOAs are in fact wider, in the range of 1500-1800 pixels. As such, I'll continue to design CYOAs the way I want to, as it seems like others enjoy them just fine without them having to be 1200 pixels wide. Again, I understand that visibility is an issue, but I think it is less of an issue than some people make it out to be.

This isn't about your beliefs.

>CYOAs are about creativity, the play of ideas, and all the fun of imaginary worlds and situations without necessarily all the rigor of a fully-realized system.
Sure, that's true, but it has nothing to do with image width. You can't use this as an argument for anything solely relating to it.

>Obviously, CYOAs need to be legible too
Why is that obvious? What if someone said that they lose a little joy when all the CYOAs they discover are legible? That's how you sound to me honestly.

>In any case, I have gotten very few (maybe none?) visibility complaints about any of my CYOAs until now.
Just because you're doing something that isn't optimal doesn't mean it's a big deal. It's more of a "it's good but could be better" sort of deal.

Why is this not about my beliefs? I think my beliefs are relevant to this discussion, as your beliefs and the beliefs of everyone who makes or enjoys CYOAs.

>Sure, that's true, but it has nothing to do with image width
Like I said, image width is one factor in determining a CYOA's ultimate design, format, and layout. Example: Beri's "Yggdrasil" CYOA, which I think is highly interesting and creative, would never have worked if it were restricted to 1200 pixels wide.

>Why is that obvious? What if someone said that they lose a little joy when all the CYOAs they discover are legible? That's how you sound to me honestly.
I don't really understand this point, sorry.

>Just because you're doing something that isn't optimal doesn't mean it's a big deal. It's more of a "it's good but could be better" sort of deal.
That's a fair point. Still, it nevertheless strikes me as odd that I've never gotten a complaint until now, and on one of my thinnest CYOAs, no less.

Anyways, like I said, I don't think you will be able to convince me to adopt a fixed width for my subsequent CYOAs. I will continue to design visible CYOAs within a reasonable width range. I think this allows me to be creative and flexible while still delivering a readable product that most of the community enjoys and, more importantly, I can be proud of. And that's all I have to say about that.

>I don't really understand this point, sorry.
What's there to not understand? The question about an image's width is in pretty much the same category as the question about whether a legible font should be used. We actually HAVE had people who used massively illegible fonts in their CYOAs you know. So yeah.
>I lose a little bit of joy if every CYOA is of a convenient width

>Tomb of qin
I must admit, immortality gets my rocks off.
>Sentinel Mios
Blowing things up should be fairly easy, with the gang I have planned. However, most importantly, I bring her along, for her healing ability. Our group will need it.

>Pollinus Satch w/mount
I need his survival skills to help navigate this insanely deadly land full of traps and poison. Plus, his combo with my next choice...

>Sal Morgen
Ensures that I can blow this place sky-high. Using explosives provided by Sal, modified using Pollinus, I should have enough demolition power to destroy the old, weak walls of this tomb. He will also be our main tool against the Terracotta warriors.

>Ming-Na Wu
She can be used to place the explosives in hard-to-reach areas, as well as fight the warriors slightly.

>Don Cephal
I need him, like Pollinus, to decrease the lethalness of the environment. Also, when push comes to shove, he could also possibly help with the explosives.

>Vara
I mean, seriously, the min-maxer came out of me for a bit here. 1 credit, for what is a 20% increase in survivability? Crazy. Also, completes my survivability at 100%, which neither of the other 1 creditors could have done.

>Surv. 100%
At least, if all else fails, I get out there alive, and with bonds I may never lose.
>Success: 60%
Admittedly, lower than I'd like, but nothing's at risk, so why not?

>Treasure thief 1
250 million is quite a loss, however I'm sure that the immortality, after I find the missing ingredient, will give me time to recoup my losses, so to speak.
>New You: Sal
This just gives me some consolation if I don't get the treasure, and allows me to stay in 'the game' after this excursion (after all, no one would want to work with me as I am now)
If I get this, then I'm practically already immortal. If I don't, then it's not the end of the world, I still have a long, exciting life ahead of me as a treasure hunter :D

What the fuck does this have to do with resolution? Making it a bizarre resolution doesn't change the fact that the content is bland, and the content is the place where you SHOULD be creative. Being "creative" with basic usability qualities is not a positive thing like format and layout is not a positive thing. Those are functional qualities. People say that the Guggenheim Bilbao is a wonder of architecture, but if it didn't do a god job standing up in addition to looking kind of cool, I can assure you that nobody would say that. Basic usability is a fundamental feature and needs to be dealt with before getting artsy.

Can creator give us a blow by blow of why they made the cyoa and why certain personality quirks were chosen? I'm curious because like in the case of SDA their best known cyoas I've read and don't see any anal play in them and while I like space refuge I don't see an obsession with fitness there. Or Liminal being a bubbly little blonde girl obsessed with fashion. Winnie Yau (3) - Nice girl with decent stats. Coming back after rolling, she gets a bonus for us being in China too, cool.
Katie Marchand (2) - So far our Success bonus is lower than Survival, so this should even it up. Sounds nice enough too.
Don Cephal (2) - Sounds like we'd get along great.
Jane (1) - This thing is fucking neat, and boosts Katie too.

Challenge: Blind Expedition, Rolled 6 - Tomb of Qin
Waifu get. I think I'll go with Winnie Yau.

Now for the rolls.

Rolled 29 on Success, which scrapes by as a victory. So we manage to succeed, but it was close. We probably have some crazy stories to tell about close calls.
Rolled 16 on Survival, which beats the odds. Turns out mercury isn't as deadly as they say.

So we managed to survive and obtained an incomplete potion of immortality and 250 million in treasure. Our journey isn't quite done yet, as we now have to figure out and obtain this last ingredient, but things have gone well so far.

Legionaries - Decent soldiers with the numbers to support the knights.
Varangian Guardsmen - Why not? They sound like a party.

This is a nice CYOA, I'm surprised I haven't seen it before.

Ouroborus Knight Ahriman (Ascension) - Clearly evil, but I like the idea of enslaving demons to extend my lifespan and gain power/wealth/a personal army. In a world where the strong rule, the four of us will rule as kings of kings.
Centurio Caivs - The strategist and face of the group, and a potential bro.
Seikona Gelthe - The healer and ranged assault knight, Caivs's defensive nature complements her vulnerability well. Ahriman and I will have to slowly corrupt her good nature.

Forest (10) - Secluded away from prying eyes, and a source of meat and timber
Magician's Lair (30) - It would be difficult to locate my underground fortress in the vast forest.
Carpentry (5) - A no-brainer with all that wood nearby.
Hunter's Cabins (10) - Fresh meat to eat and animal skins to trade for any needed supplies.
Ancient Crypts (10) - Knowledge is power - knowledge of magic moreso.
Sorcerer's Den (15) - To practice the dark arts.
Training Grounds (10) - To train my mortal, and eventually, demonic army.
Runestone (5) - In time I hope to enslave not only demons, but the spirits of nature. The idea of a holy artifact protecting a fortress of demons is also hilarious.
Library (5) - Knowledge of the plants of the forest would be useful.

Castellan - I'm sure he'll love the Training Grounds.
Druidess - Someone who can make use of the Runestone and heal injuries.
Ranger - Badass to patrol the land and discretely take care of any wandering intruders.

Scouts - Obvious.
Archers - There's plenty of wood for arrows.
Footmen - Oh, the Training Grounds will make men out of you.
Drake - Feeding him meat is not a problem with the Hunter's Cabin.

Time to exploit the world.

Perhaps the Labyrinths start to appear as they were actively carved by something rather than just being random. Perhaps there are rumors that they all connect somehow, letting you find places you'd never discover otherwise. Perhaps the Caverns are filled with mysterious things as well - gigantic glaciers larger than skyscrapers, entire caverns with ancient poetry carved into them, enormous empty castles and cities build into solid rock. Seidkona Gelthe: staying in the back and supporting us with her use of magic and runes as well as acting as the groups resident doctor when needed.
Spectre Knight Arah: using his invisibility and power of talking to the dead to divine new routes and scout ahead for us. Also good to sow chaos in enemy lines during greater battles.
Wizard knight Orion (ascension): Everyone needs an older mentor figure to smoke with and unravel the fabric of reality. Acts as our frontline tank with his rune shields and heavy armor to boot. This is basically a two for one since we discover how to destroy the chaos and simultaneously make everything cooler by bringing back magic and monsters to the world.

Mountains (15) Mainly for the defense
Magician's Lair (30) We're literally just four wizards so might as well act the part

Forge (10) We need to maintain an economy somehow
Mines (15) Golems can work the underground and form new tunnels as well
Library (5) Obligatory for the wizards
Alchemist's Laboratory (10) Making Orion feel at home as well as investigating explosives
Runestone (5) It'd be nice to keep things safe from other magic

Gold! (10) Gotta capitalize on the mines and forge to make jewelry for the sake of commerce as well as crazy alchemical ingredients.

Diplomat: Let him handle the trade deals and other nobles while my gang of wizards fuck shit up and create some golems

Scouts: The mountains are hard to traverse. Keeping scouts will be good to explore the magician's lair as well demoralizing the enemy
Archers: Create some fortifications and let them shoot from the very top.
Assasins: It's cramped, can't afford too many people and they're good at doing what they do anyway.

Drake: I can make more golems, I can recruit new wizards, can't find a drake anywhere else though.

with all of this I've created a secluded and comfy lair for me and my wizard pals to hide in while my diplomat helps keep the expenses low and get reagents. Also dragon.

Really wealth is of paramount importance when ruling a land. Having roads, markets, brothels and the mansiones to increase foot travel along with somewhere for people to stay will keep my ruling territory strong. Improved agriculture and hygiene (roman infrastructure) to protect against famine and disease to keep steady trade going. My diplomat to ease tensions with other towns and giving opportunity for great trade. The merchant to capitalize on these offerings. A spy to keep tabs on public opinion within my territory, and possibly silence the beginnings of any rebel group. Town Guard to act as a police force and small militia. Knights for obvious reasons. Archers and Longbowmen to keep any invaders at bay. Hopefully not needed. Hope I finish the ascension quest for Orion before darkness comes to my land. Warp reality and shit.

Plan: I like his magical realm, I'll play through this quest as the antagonist's ally. I won't let my allies know this. I'll use Franklin to turn Hillary into his sex demon that will never try to pass any laws harmful to video games. I'll encourage Franklin to focus less on the quest and more on inventing and getting the rest of the world to work together. I'll tell him to go for the long term strategy (so long he never beats the antagonist). Obama will be the main threat, after initially convincing the antagonist to carpet bomb the middle east and north korea into nothing, and suggesting several preferences of mine for legalization, I'll have no contact with them. I'll encourage obama to smoke weed e'rr day to the point where he smokes himself retarded. At which point I'll manipulate him into dismantling spy programs, and to smith the world in other ways I'd like.

Endgame: A benevolent, if heavily fetishistic dictator has made the world a safer place, Franklin has brought about a wonderful wave of technology and diplomacy. Obama has marilized legaljuana, Hillary has drowned in semen, 90% of congress/house are permanently retired. And I settle down in the woods with my loli monstergirl wives.

Here's a new version with a better intro and adamantine added to geography. But I need another geographical thing now, and I have no ideas.

>Phenomenon
I think what I've got there is okay though.
>Volcanic fire-troll
This world is ice and cold, that seems like an odd thing to add.
>Draugr storms
Not really seeing much association with anything else in those.

The only associate there is just "dorfs". Doesn't really seem to fit the world in my opinion.

My yandere girlfriend is another fat chick

She is the same age as me
She has light skin
Her eyes are brown
She has black hair
She has a d cup and the worlds largest butt in history

She is a daughter of a politician and is very innocent despite the fact she's is somehow a mere deconstruction of said trope

She is the worlds most smartest women in the world and is the best survivalist who has a mud hut

She is small but she looks like this http://th02.deviantart.net/fs71/PRE/f/2013/324/d/d/ssbbw_micaela_by_bedbendersinc-d6v13t7.jpg

She doesn't go outside very often and she is able to time travel

Her weapon is a piano wire for some reason and she holds my hand when ever she tells

She is really quick to anger and her face is almost childlike

rune "stone" a metal with a very malleable poetic name allowing greater changes to it and the world, appears to be simply burned stone with a grey luster, highly valued by smiths due to the malleable nature of its poem and strength which can be directly tied to its odd poetic form

Phenomenon- "singing caverns", when a pocket of gas or high pressure water is mined, the gas/liquid commonly as real world dynamics, tries to go up/down with little real headway, due to the nature of the caves the winds start to " sing" in a strange and "pure" form of the poem, causing many a variety of effects on the ore and stone it passes by as if that's the way it was sent to be creating not just that but also strange formations of gems (thought to be useless) but recent conduits seem to prize them, as for the water it "hums" with a more subtle force, changing life ever so slightly, with occasional massive mutations but nothing usually drastic, the pools of water commonly gets odd effects from the ores and poetic change it has endured, the longer its flown the more potent, but never predictable

>> No.39066683

>>39066536
The poem could be more leenant on prose, while not completely allowing you to go "and then this blade was made of nuclear rape" more of "the blade did show a nuclear glitter, of much strength and power, that the blade played havoc with wildlife, foods, and Pete"

More malleable in the sense of it being able to take a little more inconsistence and make a little stronger the weird effects we all know/want

That's a matter of the poetic form rather than an individual poem. In any case, making allowances for shitty poets doesn't seem to be in keeping with the usual way of a conduit world, in which you get power by becoming like the world itself. You should just git gud at poetry instead.

>>39066607
There's something here I think. Not sure exactly what to do with it though, spontaneous song seems a bit odd and the changes you're talking about seem to fast and too magical compared to changing something's properties by changing the poetry of which it is composed.

Maybe some natural-forming wave organs that chant poetry and effect the properties of an area? A wave organ chanting seems weird though.

I'll have to answer the 'what culture' question since it bugs me:

Anything Hollywood puts out is US culture. Bluejeans are US culture. All those bands from our nation? US culture. Caring more about your party's name than their platform? US culture. Guns and freedom? 'Merican culture. DC and Marvel? US culture. Vegas? That's a US cultural icon as well. Hell, one complaint you sometimes hear from Europeans is how the US tends to dominate the airwaves one way or another.

The reason people have a hard time identifying US culture is that the US is well on its way to winning a cultural victory. (Which is weird given how many politicians seem to want a domination victory.)
