For nostalgia's sake, it has to be the Imperial Escort Carrier. Yes, it's a slow-moving, unimpressive box full of TIE fighters, but it was the cornerstone of my strategy in Star Wars: Rebellion.

Last thread ended in a discussion of Pazaak, Sabacc, and Dejarik. Might as well start this one off right.

Which ones best?

Pazaak is probably my least favorite, since it's just so uninteractive with opponents. Dejarik's nice, but always felt a little silly to me. So I guess that leaves Sabacc.

Dejarik IS silly but also brutal in the EU or novelization of E4. I dig being able to play it for realsies though. It's a lot of fun.

You know, I never thought about it? I don't really have a favorite. I guess I'd have to go with the ImpStar Deuce because it's the least overall silly design, though I think the Mon Cal cruiser comes in close.
This is only because of memories of X-Wing and X-Wing Alliance, though. You ask me about favorite fighters and I will have an itemized list, but not capital ships.

Favourite, if we're sticking with the Wookiepedia classification of capital ship as "Anything over 100 metres long" goes to the Night Caller. Pocket carrier that can double as a torpedo frigate in a pinch.

Honorable mention goes to the Lancer-class frigate.

>It is not a ship of the line.
>You cannot battle the quad laser cannon the Lancer carries. The quad laser cannon is never alone. It is always accompanied by other, even more destructive and accurate quad laser cannons, all of which are in turn accompanied by even more quad laser cannons.
>When you see a Lancer, do you know what you do?
>You idle your rebel fucking engines. You chill the fuck out and hope the Lancer doesn't put you on its list of rebel scum it wants to vape today. You drift right there and wait for the Lancer to finish its business and make the jump to lightspeed and then you go the fuck back to base.

I find the robot ramships disagreeable, but that's just because they open the door to more hard-scifi KE bombardment retardation to make it's way into star wars (it happened two threads ago, so I feel justified in calling it a thing) other than that, they're OK as a concept. the lancer is great, though. on the other end of the spectrum, the viscount is some terrifing shit, man

I'm not big on the whole KE bombardment issue, but I do like the odd appearance of a ship being designed or retooled for ramming as a one-shot trick. Lusankya's exit in the Vong war was a treat, but it's not something that would have been practical or even viable as a repeated strategy.

So here's another EotE capital ship question: What's the point of having Fire Arc: All or various other arcs on the same weapon? Doesn't the fact that it has Fire Arc: All mean that you can already hit targets in all directions? Or can a ship fire all its weapons in different arcs with a single attack action, meaning you?

Well, salt mines were intensely important in early history due to its usefulness and biological needs, and it's an inorganic compound.

Well, when your SSD has been getting shot up constantly while holding a planet with no appreciable repair assets and you're fighting the closest thing the Vong have to Thrawn, they did the best they could with what they had: Traded a damaged asset that would have spent months at a repair yard anyway for a worldship and a warmaster.

>> No.33485921

only SOME of the guns of that class have the fire arc of all. say it's five port, five starboard and five dorsal with fire arcs port, starboard and all. you can only fire five guns (the dorsal guns) into any arc. five port guns can shoot only port, and five starboard guns can shoot starboard. it's pretty simple.

>> No.33485952

So could you have the dorsal guns fire in the port or starboard arcs, giving you ten shots in that arc with that attack action?

I'm trying to figure out why you would want to have single-arc weapons of the same type as an all-arcs weapon on the same ship.

>> No.33486019

>Fire arcs
Read the ship entries. Actually read them. With reading comprehension.
For example:
Lancer (Age of Rebellion): Four dorsal, four ventral, four port, four starboard and four forward quad laser cannons (Fire arc all OR Port OR starboard OR Forward)

This gives you:
4 turrets, fire arc forward
4 turrets, fire arc port
4 turrets, fire arc starboard
8 turrets, fire arc all (dorsal and ventral)

Rather than record a separate weapon profile for identical guns on different sections of the ship, they provide the same statline, include OR in the profile, and expect a competent reader to be able to suss out the firing arcs of a given gun based on its position on the ship.

>> No.33486082

I get that the Lancer has 20 turrets spread across its frame with the same stat line. What I'm trying to understand is the point of the guns without Fire Arc All when you have the exact same guns with Fire Arc All on the same ship. If there's a target in the front arc, and you can fire the Fire Arc Front and the Fire Arc All weapons at it all at once, then I can see why. Else, they seem like a waste.

>> No.33486335

Oh. I see. You're not bad at reading, you're just an idiot.
I mean, why did a B-17 have a nose turret and a tail turret. After all, it had a dorsal and ventral turret that could shoot stuff in front and behind. That just seems like a waste.

>> No.33486371

Not him, but I think the issue is that the reasons for real-life craft to have weapons set up like that aren't really particularly well modeled by FFG's ship stats system. In essence, there's no reason why all capships aren't Hapan Battle Dragons except canon ship model inertia.

>> No.33486379

My brain is full of fuck.

They have Port (Left), Starboard (Right), Forward (Front), and Dorsal (All). So if there are, for example, Four X-Wings on each side of the Lancer (Front, Back, Left, Right) it can fire at all of them. If there are only X-Wings in less than all four arcs, it can use the dorsal guns to provide additional shots at other X-Wings.

>> No.33486411

>If there's a target in the front arc, and you can fire the Fire Arc Front and the Fire Arc All weapons at it all at once, then I can see why.
That's exactly why dude

>> No.33486421

That's what I figured, since that makes all the guns useful, but I wanted to make sure.

On a small ship like a freighter turreted everything makes perfect sense.

On a capital ship it simply won't work in SW. SW ships don't have giant turret cannons like say WW2 battleships. They have many smaller guns instead. You simply can't turret everything with that. That's why they have laser batteries with limited fire arcs.

Copied and pasted - too lazy to reformat. Page 228 in EotE for reference. People with AoR, it should be early on in the "Starship and Vehicle Weapons" section.

Every ship and vehicle has four fire arcs: forward,
aft. port. and starboard. Each fire arc covers an
area of the ship in a ninety degree arc extending
from the center point of the ship Depending on
where on a ship's hull a vveapon is located, and tile
manner in which it is mounted, a weapon can cover
one 01- multiple fire arcs. Fixed weapons cover
only one fire a1-c. For example. the lase1· cannons
mounted in the nose of the BTL Y-Wing are fixed
forward and can only hit enemies in the forward
fire arc. Tun·et-mounted weapons. such as the turbolasel·s
mounted to the CR90 corvette. can traverse
to cover any fire arc required, which is listed
as "Fire Arc All" in the weapon's description.
Some ships also have Dorsal (top) and Ventral
(bottom) fire arcs. Weapons mounted on a ship's
dorsal surface cannot hit ventral targets, and
ventral-mounted weapons cannot engage threats
approaching from the ship's dorsal side. For example.
the ventral-mounted laser cannon on a YT-
1 300 medium freighter has a ventral fire arc of All.
which means it can engage any threat approaching
fmm below the ship, but must reposition itself
to engage enemies coming in from above.

Youre playing the wrong game then if you need rules for everything.

If you're going to be "We must have rules for this" then don't create your own ship and just use the ones from the book.

As for the weapons. Space is three dimensional combat. Sure your dorsal cannon can hit port, starboard, fore, and stern. A target might be coming in from the left on high and that dorsal turret can vap them. However, if the turret is coming in from the ventral side, it can't reach them without shooting through the ship. SOOO you stick guns all around the thing. Look at the Star Destroyers as an example. The more guns you have, the more targets you can engage at once or more firepower you can concentrate on an enemy to one side. But you can't shoot through your ship, so you make due with the space you have and the INFRASTRUCTURE you can fit inside that allows you to man those guns. Sure turrets on the top and bottom of your freighter might have wide firing arcs, but you might not have room to throw more ball turrets up there and have to position some guns on the side.

Honestly, I can't believe something as simple as this is being debated.

The gist:
>September 13th
>Rescue at Glare Peak Adventure distributed to participating retailers
>48 page adventure where players are Rebels that head to Trivar II and rescue two Rebel Pilots
>Miniatures maps for each player

Essentially, this is a free adventure for stores to run, similar to what FFG did with EotE on Free RPG day last year - presumably they're doing it separate this year to try and build more hype for their individual product as well as to build general hype for Star Wars: Rebels.

So for people wanting to get a copy of the adventure themselves, you can see if your local shop will let you run and/or keep the booklet (and any character sheets and maps nobody takes home with them), try and grab any that pop up online, or you can just wait until FFG uploads the adventure and assets onto their site (which took ~6 months for the previous free adventure).

Je'daii Quest anon here. Work's slowed down, so I'm back to planning a bit.

In keeping up with the planned beginning of the game (players being newly-ascended Je'daii Journeyers), I'be decided to make this game relatively sandboxish to keep up with the theme of exploration. I'm borrowing from Pathfinder for the grid-based exploration system, unless someone an suggest something better.

We'be established that Tython's population is nearly all Force-sensitive, but is every single one a Je'daii? I doubt it... more likely it'd be only the best of the best that make it to Rangerhood, a significant portion would probably go into a Service Corps-type deal or just pursue a simple life while focusing on their community, upholding the basic tenants of balance between the light and dark sides of the Force. Or just skip planet and do something somewhere else.

As for actual encounters, I'm still working on ideas. Dangerous animals and shit to start out, probably.

Do you think FFG will try to balance the Jedi characters with AoR/EotE characters? Or are they going to be much stronger from the start?

>> No.33500896

Exactly. Which is why they felt so real compared to looney tunes shit they called battles in other movies.

Episode IV made Tie Fighters seem threatening. In Jedi they were crashing left and right like if they were piloted by idiots with no training. Episode V made Imperial ground forces seem professional. In RotJ elite legion was defeated by teddy bears.

It's just sad.

>> No.33500901

I'm sure Jedi characters will have a bit more of a boost in grabbing force ratings over EotE/AoR, but I'd imagine that like current Force-Sensitives, Force Users will need to spend more XP to be more useful in things that aren't lightsabers and force powers - shit that'll get them locked up or killed in the standard setting.

So basically, I expect them to ultimately be fairly balanced, especially in the beginning, and depending on how you want to measure things, still somewhat balanced when high XP amounts come into play.

>> No.33511266

In the Star Wars universe, droids are usually just emotionless, non-sentient drones, but if they stay active for a long time without having their memories erased they will eventually start developing personalities and minds of their own. Which is the explanation why droids like R2-D2 can act on their own and make their own decisions.

>> No.33511273

Not really. The vast majority are just dumb A.I.'s if they have any intelligence at all and they few that have something approaching sentience are ones that haven't been maintained properly in ages.

>> No.33511313

Alright, so replace most with "many".

>ones that haven't been maintained properly in ages.
I think this falls under "not willing to admit it"

>> No.33511378

If it were more than a handful then it'd fall under that, but the vast majority of droids, even those that have 'sentience' exist only to serve, they just may have something approaching choice in their master.

>> No.33511433

The fact that any of them with a moderately advanced AI that goes without memory wipes tends to develop personality and free thinking speaks for itself I think.

>> No.33511491

It speaks of them as machines with quirks, more akin to machine spirits than anything. With very few exceptions none of them even try to operate outside of their original programming. You'll never see an assassin droid trying to be anything but an assassin or an overseer trying to be anything but an overseer, just as you'll never see a war droid trying to be anything but a war droid unless made to do so.

Originally Ryloth was tidal locked with it's sun. The inhospitable surface means they developed vast caverns beneath the surface on the terminator line between darkness and light. Living off of whatever they could scrounge the Twi'lek's developed the ability to eat pretty much anything and their body would process it.

With TCW Ryloth was changed to a more adobe style homes on the surface. It's a standard planet with a hospitable surface.

Twi'lek still have the wild metabolism that allows them to eat anything, and it's still customary for them to never refuse a meal when offered. As we can still see Orn Free Tal being as massive as he is and actually developing additional lekku to store fat deposits.

Another thing that is still canon are the various shades of Twi'leks. Rutian and Lethan among all the other fan named shades for the rest.

Really, you're not supposed to think about this with a HSF mind set. They are just moving toasters, mobile PC's, agile smart phones. When one gains quirks it is due to faulty programming and backups of code creating the illusion of sapience.

R2, while quirky as hell, was still just a droid. His quirks gave him personality, but he didn't suddenly wake up and go "I think, therefore I am!"

Most droids develop quirks that are counteractive to their continued efficient programming. It was just luck that R2 developed the way he did to provide additional support.

If you start your droid with 3/4/1/1/2/2 and go for a fighting type compared to a human you only get 2 lower stats, and they are stats you are rarely going to use. Not to mention you can buff Int later with implant so that's really just one lower stat.

For that price you get more cybernetic upgrades, better soak, immunity to a ton of crap like poisons or lack of air and ability to integrate pretty much any kind of equipment directly into your body. Not even mentioning that droids can be repaired from any kind of injury.

DM'd an Edge of the Empire game for some friends while I was visiting. It was just the demo game and I was learning the system too.

>They picked Pask and Oskara, btw

Overall it went well, but they had a tendency to set up everything to it'd hinge on one skill check, then spectacularily fail that check.

>Immediately crit one Gamorrean out of existence, reduce the remaining one to one wound and subdue him with a hard check against fists (succeeded)
>Forego talking to the bartender to interrogate the prisoner, attempt is neutral with disadvantage (so the Gamorrean grunts in his language and they don't understand it, I guess)
>Turn to the crowd to ask if anyone speaks Gamorrean (insist on rolling, and failing a charm check, everyone ignores them)

I don't want to be that railroading DM, but its kind of necessary for the beginner game, the way its structured.

But it really came to a head in the fucking junk shop.

>"Hey there, we work for Trex and are here to pick up a part for him."

"Prove it..."

>(Fails several charms against junkmaster's dicipline.) "... No."

"Do you even know what race Trex is?"

>(Fails knowledge check.) "...Gamorrean?"

"Nice try, but I'm always willing to hear out a better offer."

>(Fails the haggling check, will only accept 750 credits for the part) Fuck that, that's almost all our credits.

At this point, I have the droid come back in to remind them he exists, the junk shop owner shouts it out the door again.

>They opt to hold up the shop. That succeeds easy enough (they have blasters and all) but they fail to threaten the old man into giving up the part (that fucking discipline check, man...)

Remind them quite overtly now that the droid exists (partially because the guy playing Pask was getting rightfully pissed off)

>Pask goes out and sees the droid disassembling a wreaked speeder. Opts to help break off some of the hull. Fails that check too.

Droid thinks its funny as hell.

>Pask outright asks the droid where the part is.

Droid leaves and returns with it.

>Pask decides he's keeping the droid, successfully removes the restraining bolt with an amazingly good mechanics check.

They both return to the shop and start looting the place. I have them do a difficult perception check which nets them all the fucking equipment that he could have sold them plus a decent amount of credits and scrum.

I honestly don't care anymore, I want them out of here so we can put the game on hold for the night or go to the next encounter, whatever.

>Pask insists on keeping the droid.

>Oskara doesn't want Trex to come looking for the part and get tipped off they're looking to steal his ship.

>Threatens the junk dealer, insists on rolling, and fails it.

>"Ok, we have to kill him."

Wait, what.

>"I bind his hands, Pask holds onto him while I find a deep enough ditch in the junk yard."

Junk dealer starts screaming for help. They break one of his legs.

I'm seriously considering bumping up the trooper encounter.

Session ends with the players quite proud of themselves, the junk dealer is dead under a pile of garbage, they have roughly double their starting credits, and a droid buddy.

I don't fucking know, man...
