[ERROR] No.33130907 [DELETED]  [Reply] [Original] [4plebs] [archived.moe]

So, tonight ought to be a fun run, mostly because I can't really move all that well, haha. Long story short, I came down way wrong on my knee and popped it out of joint briefly. It's re-seated now, but it's also incredibly sore and hard to talk on, so. I've got a cane, first person to make a grandpa ghost joke gets beat with it.

Archives here:

and pastebin sheet with major characters and some plot rundown here:

You yawn, your sleep having been interrupted a half dozen times last night by low-flying witches — while they weren't buzzing you specifically, they still managed to keep you up with their miniature sonic booms and the shrieking strikers. You wish you knew why they'd been doing that, of course — but you'd have happily settled for them stopping.

“So what's the story boss?” You ask, propping your feet on the other armrest of the futon in her office and putting your hands behind your head as you lean back. The cushion is entirely too thin and you can't imagine how the hell anyone could sleep on this thing, but you're tired enough to not complain. Honestly, you're shocked she hasn't brought a cot up here yet.

“A few things.” She says, without saying anything about your decided lack of anything approaching military bearing — then again, the unit's always been extremely relaxed about that sort of thing. “First thing is we've gotta do your next four aggressor witches. The matrons have them all picked out. You'll start against them day after tomorrow, which means we'll have the weekend off. Same deal as last time: pick one, tell me, I'll deal with the rest. Dossiers are on my desk over here.”

“Got it.” You respond, kind of drowsily.

“Second, Chance-Vought flew some stuff into Gatwick yesterday. It's been loaded up on the ferry for the week, so that'll be in today. They requested you and Merlin head down there sometime today so they can do their sales pitch.”

“What kind of stuff?” You ask, looking over at her. She shrugs.

“Not entirely sure. Components Merlin requested that their aerospace engineers cleared, a couple weapons systems they cleared for use with VX-4 in California, replacement components, spares, that kind of thing, I'm told. When you get a chance, go down to the hangar and check it out so I can get that off my desk.” She says, flipping to another note.

“Third, Admiral Nixon is on the way here.” She says.

You sit up and look around, hurriedly brushing off the front of your flight suit.

“Not now,” Ice says, laughing lightly. “He's been transferred to the ETO, replacing that general that just had the heart attack as commander-in-chief, American forces. Puts him next in line for command of the whole theater, too. He fired a message off to us to expect a visit sometime soon; nothing past that.”

“Well, that's not too bad. He's alright, for top brass.” You say, laying back down and closing your eyes. Maybe you could catch a short nap on this thing after all.

“Yeah, well, he's also going to be pinning some medals on some of us, along with the French and the Germans. And the press will be there, so be ready for that.” She says. “And no, you cannot conveniently disappear, no matter what commander Laroux says about it, so don't ask her.

“Last, I talked to Rachel about what you two were talking about yesterday when you got back.”

You nod. “Yeah, we-”

“We'll start working on the basics of theory tomorrow. I don't have time today, and it's Jean Luc's last day of leave with Rosalie — his unit is due to ship back to the line Wednesday. I'm honestly not sure how this will work, or if it will, but-” She pauses.

“But?” You prompt.

“But thank you for letting us at least try to help you.” She says, after a second. “It means a lot. Here.”

She tosses you a pillow. You barely catch it out of the air, and regard it: it's one of those small, foam-filled ones that you've seen around for camping and that kind of thing, covered in a woodland camouflage bag. “If you want to take a nap, go ahead. It's not that bad in here, I can close the blinds.”

[x] If it's alright with you, yeah. Don't let me sleep too long.

You nod, stuffing the pillow underneath your head and closing your eyes. “If it's alright with you, yeah. Don't let me sleep too long though.”

“I'll wake you up in a couple hours.” She says, sounding almot releived. “Here, let me get the blinds.”

“Frank?” She calls, right afterwards.

“Muh?” You respond, kind of groggily. You were just about asleep, too.

“You've been asleep a couple hours, it's thirteen hundred.”

“What? No shit?” You ask, opening your eyes and checking your watch- it damn sure is, she let you sleep almost a full five hours.

“You feel any better?” She asks, as you blink the sleep out of your eyes and sit up, planting your boots on the floor with a solid thump.

“Same as I always do. I think I'm caught up on my backlog to, like, flight school now, though.” You say, chuckling- you could always use more sleep than you're getting, but you're realistic enough to know that you've got it better than a lot of people.

She nods. “Alright, so. Do you want to go ahead and let us know who you want to fly against? We can do that later, so long as it's done by, uh...” She checks her wall clock. “Call it eighteen, or whenever Mrs. Mackintosh wants to serve evening chow.”

“What else was there again?” You ask.

“There's also some vought guys for us to talk to, the ferry came in while you were asleep, Merlin's down there with them, I think. They've got some new weapons they'd like to go over with you, but they haven't sent anyone looking for you, so it's probably not too time critical.” She says.

“What about Admiral Nixon?” You ask.

She shrugs. “Nothing, I don't even think he's closed up his Headquarters in pearl yet, anyway. Might not see him for a couple of days yet.”

[x] Alright, hand me those files, let's get the witches sorted.

You think about it for a second- then decide to get the work out of the way so you have more time to enjoy gawking at your new toys. “Alright, let's see those files.” You say, moving from the futon to one of the chairs on the other side of the desk from Ice.

She takes the four brown folders and spreads them out in front of you, like a hand of cards. “Here you go. This is the stuff the matrons will release on them, what they think you need to know.”

“Ya know,” You muse, looking them over and opening a file- the one on the other soviet witch, Natalya Tsvetkova, “It's kind of irritating that they're getting full threat analysis with post-flight debriefings and all we're getting is some heavily edited personal files.”

“I know.” Ice says, shrugging helplessly. “But they're convinced this is the best way to do it. If you and Merlin are going in blind, you'll have to use your talents more to make up for it, instead of being able to play against their witches weaknesses. They don't care if you win, they just want to see what you can do.”

“It's still bullshit. Like this-” The files are nearly empty, giving you the barest hint of the girl- name, rank, age, there's not even a hometown or where she trained, or even the unit she's from. “All this tells me is her name and how old she is. What can she do? Ya know, it'd be nice to not get blindsided by some crazy shit like lightning or something.”

“Lightning is a French thing. Runs in Rosalie's family, actually.” Ice says, grinning. “Ice and cold tend to be more what Russian witches specialise in, when they do that kind of thing.”

1/3

>> No.33133299

You shake your head, looking at the other three, then pick another out. “Jessica's in here?”

Ice nods. “They want to see if there's anything in your family line, so Jessica's a natural choice.”

“She's got almost no combat time!” You protest. “Shit, she's got less than anyone else we've flown against!”

Ice nods again. “Mhmm. But she scored very well in the academy, and Katsumi thinks very highly of her- she's the one that put her name forward, afterall.”

You almost have to physically bite your tongue to retort about Katsumi and Jessica's relationship- you're pretty sure you don't approve, but your parents always told you to mind your own business when it came to other people's relationships.

“Zuchinni's getting her rematch?” You ask, looking at the third folder- you've already read it, and there's no reason to believe there's anything new in there.

“Yes.” Ice confirms, sliding the file over her desk and opening it up herself. “Not sure what her replacement strikers are going to be though. The Starfighters she had are being phased out, but I don't think she's rated for the Tornadoes they're being replaced by, so... “ She trails off with a shrug.

2/3

>> No.33133356

“And Marissa Styles. Oh god, there's three of them?” You ask, looking at the last folder. You'd met her once before, and been told she was the twin's big sister, but it's still kind of a shock.

“Five, actually. They have two little sisters, as well.” Ice says. “Marissa's been in the med most of the duration. Some action over the middle east and southern Germany and Poland. Tomcat driver.”

“Wonderful.” you say, flatly. You're not too worried about the ability of even new tomcat strikers to match the wyvern, but at the same time, Marissa, like Young, is a combat vet and largely unknown to you.

“There's this batch, then they want to do a little more. Maybe another group of four and some two on ones.” Ice says, leaning back in her chair. “But If Nixon's on the way, he could pull the plug on the whole thing and send us to the front, he's got that kind of clout.”

She shakes her head. “We'll see when he gets here. Till then, who do you want to fly against?”

[x] Tie vote! (that's aight.)

You shake your head after some internal deliberation. “I don't know, Ice.” You say, after a minute. “Jessica will never forgive me if I don't give her first crack out of this group, but I'd really like to see what Natalya can do.”

She nods, holding up Marissa and Gabriella's folders. “But I can put these back, right?”

You nod. “Yeah, I'll deal with them later. Marissa is likley to give me the most trouble, but I'm not too worried about her, and Gabriella will understand, she seems like a good kid.”

Ice doesn't respond, putting the pair of files back on the bookshelf next to her desk. “Ok, so that just leaves Jessica and Natalya.”

“Yeah...” You trail off.

“Well, Jessica's gotten nothing but glowing praise from the corps and even a couple IJN and IJAAF mentions.” She says, picking up Jessica's file and leafing through it. “Not much actual combat time, just a little in and around Hiroshima and Kure. Tangled with Konstantina once, but neither of them managed to stay in it long- clouds and weather broke them up.”

“So why's the Imperial army aiforce and Navy talking about her?” You ask. “If she hasn't seen that much combat time?”

Ice shrugs. “Who knows? She's apparently been around Katsumi almost constantly since some incident with a jumbo jet, so that could be it. You know, talk good about the Imperial family's friends or whatever. Hell, you got a medal from them, didn't you?”

You nod. “Yeah. And that Ayumi bitch was quick to point out it was the lowest class they could award me, given my rank.”

Ice snorts. “You're not still bitter, are you?”

You shake your head. “I never was. It was just pointless, like she was just trying to needle me. Whatever. So Jessica's pretty highly thought of?”

Ice shrugs. “Seems like it.”

“What about Natalya?” You ask, tapping her folder.

Ice shakes her head slightly, picking up the thin folder and looking inside. “She- I don't actually know. But I agree with Commander Laroux. Something's not right about that girl.”

You tilt your head to one side. “Something's not right with all witches, Ice. Wanna try and clarify a bit?”

She throws a wad of paper at you, then sticks her tounge out. “I'm perfectly normal, thank you anyway.” She says, then thinks for a moment, confusion and frustration crossing her face. “I... I don't know. She feels wrong. Like, the way she carries herself, and acts around people- she's never away from General Matron Litvyak. Ever.”

“Ok, so she's a prime canidate for a mental case.” You note. “Most of us don't have much room to talk.”

“No- I.. “ she sighs in frustration. “I don't know how to explain it. She feels wrong, like she's not entirely human. Something's off about her, her magic, her personality, everything. It's... “ She pauses.

“It's disconcerting.” She says, finally. “I don't think she's a threat in the air to you, but she's not normal, regardless, and I want you to be careful when you do fly against her.”

[x] Well, then best get her out of the way first, so I don't have to worry, huh?

“Well,” You say, thinking it over some more, “Put like that, I'd best get her out of the way first, so I don't have to worry, huh?”

Ice looks dubious at your decision, but nods eventually. “If you say so. I'll pass it along, I'm sure General Matron Litvyak will be happy to hear it.” She grins. “Konstantina might not be though.”

“Yeah, I was meaning to ask you.” You say, her mention of Konstantina reminding you, “Why's she not on the solo list?”

“To fly against you?” Ice asks. “Oh. She's already done so, repeatedly. The matrons wanted her along for the doubles and maybe as an alternate if they couldn't get their first choice, but she was never supposed to fly against you solo. She's just in for them to interview.”

“Bet she's not happy.” You say, standing up.

Ice laughs. “Yeah, no. I've already talked to her a few times. She wants you all to herself.” She shakes her head, missing your horrified expression at the concept. “As if I had sole control of who you were flying against. All I am right now is a glorified secretary.”

“Well, at least it's less work, right?” You ask.

She stares at you blankly, saying far more by doing so than she could have by actually answering.

“Point taken.” You say, trying not to laugh. “So how about heading down to the hangar? Have you seen what Merlin's been working on?”

Ice shakes her head. “No, I haven't had a chance. Is it pretty impressive?”

“You- wait, no one's told you either?” You ask, kind of surprised- you'd have figured Slider would have run up here as fast as she could to tell Ice about Merlin's improved strikers, so the fact she's still in the dark about them is a shock.

Ice shakes her head. “No, but I figure it's big, there's a letter in here from vought about some bigwig or other of theirs coming by.”

“Only very.” You say. “C'mon, let's go.”

“Go- wait, Frank. I've got a lot to do and-”

“And you always have a lot to do. C'mon, you won't regret it, I promise.”

She sighs, but stands up, nodding. “Alright, I'll go.” She says, quietly. “But We can't take too long, ok?”

You grin. “Yeah, sure.”

The hangar isn't empty- honestly, it never is, with crews working on both your wyvern and a group clustered around Merlin's area- a pair of striker racks now inhabit it, along with, you note, a posted SEAL witch, though today it's not Brigette, but instead a blonde haired girl with a submachine gun carried easily and a pair of blacked out abrams strikers on. She nods in your direction as you walk towards the group, giving you only a glance.

Merlin sits at a stool on the racks, helping one of Kenji's techs install something in one of the strikers, near the wingroot. You note the presence of conformal tanks there- at least, you assume they're conformal tanks, though it's hard to tell.

“Hey Merlin.” You say, greeting her- her head whips up and around, a smile on her face.

“F-Frank!” She beams, jumping up and slamming into you, hugging you. “I-I wondered if you w-were going to come down. T-they brought a-almost a whole shop for m-me to play with! W-want to see?”

[x] Actually, I wanted you to show the boss your thing with the strikers, if that's alright

“Actually, Merlin, I wanted to show the boss your thing with the strikers, if that's alright.” you say, patting her head.

She lets go of you and nods, backing up and saying something in Japanese to the tech, who nods and closes up the panel he was working on, stepping away from the striker.

“Since when did you speak Japanese?” You ask, looking at her.

“I d-don't.” She says, looking back up at you. “B-but Kenji t-taught me a few things so I c-can work with the crew b-better.”

“Well, alright then. So should she go up there- or...?” You ask, looking up at the pair of strikers now hanging in their side-by side racks.

Merlin nods, then pauses. “W-wait! L-let me find Brigette. S-she was getting us something.”

Ice looks at you, and you shrug as merlin runs off. “So what do you figure these are?” She says, looking at the conformal pods.

“No clue.” You respond, looking at them. “Not fuel, right?”

Ice shakes her head, tapping one with a knuckle. “They don't sound hollow, and unless Merlin's spearheading some amazing breakthroughs in all kinds of fields I don't think they've managed to minaturize hybrid turbines yet.”

“She's good,” You say, “But she's not a one witch technical revolution. Though if they're giving her a shop to play with, I think we may have to start watching her like we do you.”

“What's that supposed to mean?” Ice asks, laughing. “You saying she'll stay up all night and forget to eat because she's too busy playing in a machine shop?”

“That's exactly what I'm saying.” You answer, bluntly. “Only way to make it worse would be to get her someone who could craft magical components on demand.”

Ice laughs. “What, if they did we'd never see her again?”

“Probably.” You say, shaking your head. “Barin may be a drag for the rest of us, but she's loving it.”

“Well, that's good, though.” Ice says, watching Merlin talking to the SEAL nearby. “She hasn't had a lot of chance for anything besides flying with you, and there's no way that's good for her. Even when we come up on leave she doesn't do much.”

“Yeah, I know.” You say. “She told me a while ago her parents were always busy, and her sister...” You shrug. “I'm glad she's got this though.”

“What if she wants to stay?” Ice asks, quietly. “She might- or she might even be talked into going back to the states before it's over to do this full time. Do you think you could work with another RIO?”

She gets K'd The F O, we've seen it. Same shit probably happens to whichever sherk is actually the RIO or Katya or anyone else we plug into the thing besides Merlin.

That's because Merlin had the magic drain set to a level that felt right for her. Which turns out to be absurdly high. Is that because she's got a gnome battery to draw off all the time or because that's her own thing?

That's why we need to test with the twins specifically since they already fly a Wyvern the same way Merlin and Frank do.

Outcomes:
1. Frank is the deciding factor and performs well with Clarissa.
2. Merlin is the deciding factor and performs well with Alyssa.
3. Frank+Merlin is the deciding factor and they both perform poorly.
4. Frank and Merlin are both factors that drastically increase performance with anybody they fly with, but each other to absurd degrees.

[x] It'd have to be another witch, and she'd have to be damn amazing to fill Merlin's shoes.

You shrug, careful to keep your voice low enough Merlin doesn't overhear. “If she decided to go back to the states- and I honestly don't think she would, but if she did,” You say, half turning. “Then they'd have to find another witch like her to replace her.”

Ice laughs, bitterness evident in it. “That simple, huh?” She says. “Frank, we don't even know what Merlin's like, and she's right here. Finding another like her? Forget it.”

“I don't know, Boss. I really don't.” You say. “Merlin's pretty damn amazing, honestly. Katya's good in her own right, and you saw what happened in California anyway.”

“What if-” Ice says, then pauses. “What if we tried talking to Merlin. About what she does.”

“Isn't that what they're doing?” You ask.

Ice shakes her head. “No. well, yes.” She says, after a second. “But I mean, how she does it. How she's able to work with you like she does.”

You frown. “But they're already doing that-”

She shakes her head again. “They're not. Frank, that's the thing. They're convinced it's almost all her, it's just luck of the draw that put a male talent in with her. She says it's all you. Slider and I think it's a combination. We've been working with Rosalie on the theory.”

“So you'd talk to Merlin about being a RIO for me?” You ask.

She nods. “If she went back to the states, one of us would have to. I think Slider would hate it, but it would depend on how much of a... uh. A connection she'd need with you to do it. Merlin practically worships you, so...”

>> No.33138829

“Well I-” You're cut off by the distinct thump of approaching tank strikers- Maman Brigette, carrying a fairly hefty looking rifle on a strap, along with a metal case in her hands, is heading towards you from one of the disused side rooms- the one you suspect they've set up Merlin's machine shop in.

“Baron, white witch, leetle sistah.” She says, greeting you. “I do be bringin the 'tings you ax fo, but I'm curious now, leelte sistah. What you be conjuring up, huh?”

Merlin grins. “J-just put t-them over there on the striker r-rack.” She says. “A-and I'll s-show you. D-do you want to help?”

Brigette looks at the pair of testbed strikers in their racks, and considers her options- shooting a glance at Ice before nodding. “My girls be able to handle the place for now. What I need to be doin?”

Merlin smiles. “O-ok, you take the n-number one on the right, T-tabitha, if you want, g-go ahead and take the n-number two. It's t-the one we've been w-working on all d-day.”

Brigette nods, handing off her rifle to the other SEAL witch and powering down her strikers, slipping long legs out from the interface and stretching them breifly before grimacing when her bare feet hit the smooth stone floor. “Too cold for me.” She says, climbing up the rack and slipping her legs into the YF-23 strikers there.

Ice smiles lightly, not saying anything- or even really reacting to the cold floor as she climbs the striker rack and slips in the unit, the magical circle beneath it rapidly expanding as the strikers come to life.

“So what am I looking for?” Ice asks.

“O-ok. We c-changed the controls a b-bit, here.” Merlin says, handing up a pair of gloves. “Y-you'll w-want those. M-maman, we d-don't have the new controls i-in that unit yet, s-sorry.”

Brigette shrugs- you notice neither of them have released the rack locks on their strikers yet. “It be ok, little sistah, but I'm not seein what be makin these so special.”

Merlin smiles. “T-tabitha, the switches y-you need are on the new r-rifle.” She says, indicating the large bore weapon. “O-on the grip there, U-under your thumb.”

Ice hefts the 'rifle', looking at it. “Merlin, what-”

“W-we haven't c-cleared it yet, b-but it's a m-modified fifty caliber s-sniper rifle.” She says. “A-ammo is from a p-powered feed u-unit in the conformal bay on the r-right, the bay on the l-left can be configured f-for countermeasures o-or more ammunition o-or as a rocket p-pod.”

“What about witches like moi, little sistah?” Brigette asks. “Fifty be fun, true true, but I be preferin my rifle dat I been shootin for years now.”

Merlin nods. “W-we're working on t-that too. I think w-we can make a p-pressure pad and a feed u-unit for any weapon w-we need to. W-we just selected that b-because t-that's what Miss Zemke s-suggested. “

>> No.33138863

“What about the Missiles, kiddo?” You ask.

“M-missiles? O-oh!” She says, then nods. She starts walking Ice through selecting missiles- it's actually not as bad as you thought, using the thumb switch in combination with the MFD to display weapon selection and bay door conditions- and the look of utter shock on Ice's face when the nose of an inert AIM-120 pokes out of the doors is priceless- you wish you had a camera.

Ice and Brigette climb down shortly after, Ice somewhat shaken, and Brigitte thoughtful.

“T-they brought some things f-for us, too, Frank!” Merlin says, after she watches Ice and Brigitte dismount. “D-do you want to see what they brought us o-or my n-new shop?”
