Mostly, it depends on your GM.

Personally, I just learn about my players' characters by walking them through character creation and asking about the reasoning behind their choices. Let them tell me anything more they find important.

If your GM wants an actual written background and won't tell you how much to write, leave the game because they are a garbage GM. If you don't want to do this, then pic related is enough in my opinion.

Don't make him cartoonishly evil by having him skin evil by having him skinning a deserter in front of their eyes. Don't tell them about shit that happened in places they'll never visit even if it's about his enslaving entire villages. Realize that DMing Exalted is like herding cats, the players will be expected to accomplish whatever they set their minds to, and if they've nothing on their minds and expect you to drag them along by the hair, the game is dead in the water.

Find out what the players and player characters want and value, and make story lines off of that. If not giving a fuck about your poorly made villain and you animu plot is the only reason for dropping them, then do so, they deserve a better ST anyway.

OP, I hope you're still here, refreshing every few minutes until your thread dies, hoping to see a reply.
Well, I'm hoping you haven't already seen this heap of knowledge I'm about to drop on ya, so you'll always remember the kindness of an anonymous stranger throughout your career as the best goddamn GM your crew has ever fucking seen.

Step one is to have your first session be a bit longer than the norm, just so everyone can become familiar with the setting and rules, or perhaps receive help creating their characters. I'm a fan of doing real short solo sessions so your players can feel established into the world, but that's not always possible.

Character goals and beliefs, son.

Ideally you want to establish them at chargen, but it's not to late to do it now. Just ask each of them:

> What's a short-term goal of your character?
> What's a long-term goal of your character?
> What's something your character believes in?

Then work in opportunities for those goals to be accomplished in-game, and ways for the goals to be challenged or affirmed.

Also nobody wants to RP smalltalk at a campfire. If it happens, cool. If you really want to make it happen, have an NPC ask them stuff (basically the same as above, but in-game).

It does take a while to get into RP for newbies, and having an experienced RPer definitely helps.
