"Does this monster really mean that much to you?"

I let those words sink in for a few moments.
Why am I doing this?

It feels more like a matter of principle than because I want something.

"No."
"Then why?"

"Because.." I try to think of the right words, "I feel it's only right for everyone to have a second chance. No matter who they may be."

"Even Asai? You've given him plenty of chances."

"Even Asai, even if I've given him plenty of chances."

Silence.

"I suppose it doesn't matter, but I just have to know: Were you even wanting a father?"

That idea seems to resonate in my mind for a few moments.
Did I even want a father?

"No." I say, plainly.
"Not even a little?"

"It's crossed my mind." I say with a bitter taste in my mouth. "But- I don't need it. I'm happy with the family I have. I have all the brothers and sisters who the cutest, and most wonderful people in the world."

It's true!

"You feel it's only right for everyone to have second chance, yes?"
"Of course." I cross my arms at the..nothing that is asking me questions.

"Why do you feel that way?"
"Well, not automatically forgiven, but if they really are sorry and become better then.. yeah."

"Is that all that makes someone forgiven? Feeling sorry about it?"

"Not every time, of course. But- like the Chairman. I did a lot of damage to him, but he seems to be at least considering being a better person."
"Would you even forgive him, eventually?"

"Sure! If he shows that he really means it."

The definitions here are starting to get vague, and I'm not sure I know where he's going with this.

The streetlights are flickering on now. We've been out a very long time.

The sirens that were once howling in the distance have subsided.

Leaving me with a fairly non-eventful walk home. With my family, and friends.

Everyone seems to be chattering about what happened today. The big building, the monsters, the concrete, the statues, all of it.
The mood seems cheery among those.

Not among the three who are staying to the back of the group. Mom, Kaori, and I. We feel lost in thought.

Aside from the children, who seem to have forgotten already; we have not told anyone yet about Asai being trapped in the card.
Or that he found a way to escape once.

It clearly has Mom worried, and then I started to worry because Mom was worrying. Kaori seems to have a sense about these things, maybe she can read our thoughts and isn't telling us? I don't know.

>Everyone, I have something to say.
>I think everyone should have a say in what happens to Asai

"Are you... okay?"
The terrifying creature looks up at me, and then looks away.

"Are you, a part of Asai?"

"Go away." It says, in a deep baritone.

That was unexpected, to say the least.

I am Itsukuma Masami.
I'm going to beat Asai, one way or another.

He's right here, too! Well, a part of him, is. I have Asai, who has been a massive pain for my entire life, trapped here inside of this card. It's akin to his prison.
Not just Asai, I also captured his giant building-turned-giant-monster.

So, now what do I do with them?

"Why are you acting like this?" I nudge the giant-monster-turned-ugly-monster.

"Because." He almost seems to scoot away from me. "I've been trapped here with my evil half, and I'm not sure I'll ever be free again."

Wait, 'evil half'?

I'm not sure that I'm following along anymore. I am so bad at this interrogation thing!
So, Asai claims that this is his evil half. Yet, his 'evil half' claims that Asai is his evil half.

Well, I've known Asai long enough to where that could be possibility. Yet-

>"I don't believe you."
>"Asai is your evil half? Prove it."
>"Okay, so Asai is your evil half, why were you destroying downtown earlier?"

"Excuse me! Stop! Wait!" I sit up, pushing the new girl upright. "How long have you been here?"
She gives me that confused look again, that look which says "I should know the answer to this, but I don't."

"Can I hug you again!?" Her voice is dripping with enthusiasm.
"..Okay, sure."
She almost tackles me as she wraps her arms around my shoulders. Kaori still seems dumbstruck as to what is happening right now.

I am Itsukuma Masami. Yesterday was a terrible day, but today is going to be better! Today we're going to find out how to turn monsters into people, and then we're going to use it on Asai and end this terrible mess!
At least, I hope so. This is kind of weird what is going on right now. I decided to do a check-up on one of my cards in the other world. Then there was this girl waiting when I got here! I don't know who she is, but she seems really energetic. Also, she's wearing Cirrus' clothes. That's spooky.

"N-no, seriously. Do you have any idea who you are?"
That look again, she's kneading her shirt.

"Masami." Kaori interrupts, "Can we talk?"
"Oh! Um. One second."

"Don't go away!" She bolts to her feet.
"I'm not going away, it's just, one moment. It's a family thing."
"'Kay."

We walk some distance away from the girl as she gazes at us awkwardly.
"Masami, don't you know who this is?"
I think about Kaori's question for a second, look around the scenery, and then back to her.
"No."

"Masami, This is Cirrus! Your card has become another person!"

>Noo, No way! That's not true.
>T-then why is she here and not out there like Julie and Haruko?
>..We should tell Mom about this right away.

"STOP! JUST STOP!" Aiko yells.

The two that had been arguing cease their squabble for the time being. Aiko is usually such a calm, reserved girl. The uncharacteristic outburst silence the warring parties.

Marie, Aiko's mother, wants her to live life her way. I think she just needs to leave Aiko alone and let her life like she wants.
Aiko doesn't want us to argue.

So we're at a standstill.
I am Itsukuma Masami. I've found my best friend, Aiko. Which means I've also found her mother, Marie. Aiko is in the tough position of maybe being forced by her mother to go fight my not-father Asai. The problem is that I'm certain Asai is way stronger than her.
I'm not sure what Marie's plan is supposed to be. She's invested herself in it enough to spirit Aiko away to a decrepit shrine in the middle of the mountains for 'training'. So convincing her that this is a poor idea is going to be very difficult.

"It's just as well." Marie sighs, "Break time is over, and we have important work to do. Your friend can wait here if she wants."

"Marie! Wait! What is your goal after you defeat Fortune?!"
She doesn't answer. Aiko stands up, and worriedly waits for an answer.

"Because after you beat Asai, there's only Empress, Priestess, and Magician left! Are you going to send Aiko after them, too!?"

No answer. Aiko seems extremely worried right now.

"Let's go Aiko."
"Stop." Aiko's tone of voice changes. "P-please answer that question, it really worries me."

"Aiko." Her mother addresses her coarsely. "The fact of the matter is that I'll be too old to do this soon enough. That is my only intention."

"Mom, you didn't answer the question!"

>"She's right, answer the question, Mrs. Hotaka"
>Stay silent
>Pat Aiko on the shoulder, reassure her.
>Try to contact the adults somehow to show them where Marie is currently.

"I have to make a card." I say, thinking about Asai's words carefully.
"..Okay?" Haruko seems confused.
"I have to make a card to find someone. How do I do that?"

Really, it doesn't make much sense to me at all. What is it supposed to do? How would something like that work?
Something that can find someone.

I am Itsukuma Masami. And my best friend has been kidnapped!
By her own mother!
Does that make it a kidnapping? I don't know, but I don't like it.

Aiko's mother, Marie, has whisked her away with the intent on turning her into a weapon! I found Aiko's sister, Aina, and was able to find out that Marie was hiding in another world. That said, I don't know where in the other world she is hiding. It's a big place, and she could be anywhere inside of it.

Asai, who I still hate, gave me a hint on finding her. I could start by creating a card that can do the searching for me. I don't know how I'm going to do that.

I'm still inside of Aiko's house. It's still as turned over and ransacked as before. The only thing I've found in here so far is Aina.

>Keep searching the house, maybe Marie left some clues.
>Aiko didn't want to do this, maybe SHE left a clue?
>This is a waste of time, try making up that card.
>Maybe try using a card?
>Why am I listening to Asai!? I'm going to find Aiko my own way!

"Come on! This has to work! We're so close!"
Julie and I push against Mom as she tries to fit through the much-too-narrow window to the outside.
It's her chest, her huge chest is keeping her from wriggling through to the outside.

"Stop stop STOP STOP!" She yells, pulling herself back into the building. "We'll have to try another way."
Aww.

I am Itsukuma Masami, and I'm having a small problem right now. We're trying to make our escape from Fortune, but it's impeded by the ground floor not having an exit at the moment. We took a former-monster's advice on slipping out through the window of one of the restrooms. It's just we're having a problem right now trying to fit Mom through the otherwise extremely narrow opening.
"Come on! One more time! I think you can do it!" Julie tries encourage Mom.
"No, not today." Mom crosses her arms.

It was sound advice, Julie and I can fit through just fine. I suppose the girl didn't take adults into account.
Speaking of which, that girl is sitting in the main room, refusing to move or leave with us. She thinks she belongs to the building or something.
I can tell, very faintly, that she seems sad about that. She's laying her face on the front desk.

"Now what?" Julie asks.

>Let's try another floor
>Let's widen the hole!

"Mom?"
She doesn't answer. The monsters continue to circle the burning orb surrounding her. I'm not sure if its protecting her or imprisoning her.
"MOM!"

I am Itsukuma Masami.
I found Mom!
She's inside of an orb of fire on the ground floor. Monsters circle around the burning globe as they try to find a way inside. With me, Julie assesses the situation and worriedly looks on.

"What can we do from here?" I ask her.
"I can probably put out the fire, but I'm more worried about the monsters."

There's three of them, one of them is the secretary that usually waits at the desk on this floor. Or at least, this is what she looks like when she's not being a secretary.
The other two I haven't seen before, but they look extremely disinterested in me. They're more enthralled by the burning globe that is keeping them at bay.

The secretary freezes. She steps back and sits down in a chair, and then spins it around to face us.
"May I help you?" Her voice still sounds soothing and calm, despite her face looking completely the opposite.

>"LET MOM GO RIGHT NOW!"
>Don't even humor her! Fight!

"Julie, I think we should focus on finding Mom first. We can only worry about one thing at a time!"

Julie is reluctant, but agrees with the sentiment. Slowly she takes my hand again.
"Let's keep going. I think we're getting closer."

"Where are we even looking, anyway?"
"There's a friend who's inside the building. I'm trying to find my way to her."

Julie has a friend inside the building?

"That's as far as you're going."

The entire group jumps at the sound of a new voice. We can't see it, and I can't see anything in the 'real' world.
This is a monster that's hiding in the shadows.

"Master Tower doesn't want you here. I was hoping the labyrinth would have given you the hint, but since you have to be so stubborn."

"Masami." Julie stands out in front of me. "Let me handle this, you-"
"No. If you're fighting, I'm fighting too!"

I say that, but I can't even see the monster that I'm supposed to be fighting. It's completely hidden in the darkness.

"There's no need to fight, I merely want you all gone." He says, the group huddles together as they try to determine where the voice is coming from.

Suddenly, hundreds of tiny little lights start to appear all around us. They float amidst the darkness, each one flashing very briefly like fireflies.

"I am hiding among these lights. Do your worst."

My worst, huh?

"YOU NEED TO HAVE SOMEONE GO WITH YOU!" Kaori yells at me as I'm walking away.
"I'll be fine! Really! You need to find out where Mom is inside! Go on, do it!" I yell back at her.

Although, she is right. I can feel the sense of worry building up inside of me as I get closer and closer to Fortune HQ.

I am Itsukuma Masami. At first glance, I'm just an average girl. Except for the fact that I can use magic cards, average girls can't do that.
I've had a tough day. That seems to be most days for me, but this day has been worse than usual. To make a long story short: Fortune was attacked by monsters, and used the chaos and confusion to kidnap Mom. At least, that's what I think is happening. Mom is inside of this huge, intimidating building, and her phone isn't responding.
I'm really worried.

I've already decided that I'm going in there, and they've been mostly nice to me in the past. This may just all be a huge misunderstanding.
Or I'm trying to talk myself into not going in there alone the closer I get to the building. The shield surrounding the area changes the lighting to a sickly green, and the entire tower has an eerie silence about it. It's like the entire place is abandoned, even though I know it's not.
I sigh, and let the jump card gently overtake me. With a leap, I spring with agility straight to the rooftop.
Then I almost hit my head on the shield, oof.

Landing on the gravel, I look toward the rooftop entrance to the building. That's when I notice that the door is wide open, like it's waiting for me.

>G-go inside, time to do this.
>Wait wait wait, just take a moment to regain myself. and think about this.
>Sit down and cry. I need a moment.
>Pick a card for entering the building? (Which one?)

"Itsukuma!"
The principal steps out of his car. The doors open behind him and several others step out. All them look ready for a fight.

Ryouta and Maeda are the first to exit. Shortly followed by Aiko, and behind her-

And behind her, still not moving from his seat, is Ken'ichi. He looks like he's fallen asleep.

I am Itsukuma Masami, today everything is falling apart as the monsters under the Chairman's control have broken loose. They're now fighting amongst each other, and the only reason they haven't turned their attention to the town is because of their lust for combat.

Which isn't good, because their numbers dwindle by the second. Right now the main brunt of them decided to invade Fortune HQ, and I would be happy with letting them have the place, but it's not going to last forever.

There's still hope! I have a ring the Chairman dropped that can apparently put them back in line. Mom wanted me to give it to Asai, who is a scary jerk that would probably LOVE nothing more than to control all those monsters. I came up with a better plan thanks to Kaori and left Mom in the care of someone we trust. After that, we left Fortune to enact our battle strategy.

"Why did you want us here?" Ryouta says, looking at the scenery and Fortune's HQ in the distance. "Shouldn't we be over there?"

"Everyone!" Kaori raises her voice, "We're not going to Fortune today. We're here to stop it at it's source."

In the distance is the mansion where Kaori and the Chairman used to live. There aren't many monsters around it, they seem to have left for Fortune. But I can clearly see several silhouettes perched on the rooftops, as if they're waiting for me.

>Select your party:
>>Should everyone go with you? Adults only?
>>Maybe just Kaori and I, let everyone else be on watch?
>>Nope! Everyone inside! Don't split the group!

The tall, lanky aberration slowly turns to face me. Behind him is a perfectly immobile statue of the Principal. He stands completely still with a look of determination on his face, despite not moving a muscle.

Now the monster he was fighting has his sights set on me.

I am Itsukuma Masami, I came to school today to hang out with friends but what I found instead was trouble. Most of the school seems to be on lockdown, and my friends who usually deal with trouble at school are frozen into statues!
And I don't know who to be angrier at, the monster or whoever is commanding it to do this. I had once thought that I everyone who was causing all the trouble with monsters in the hospital, but now I see that more need to join them.

That's between me and Asai, now I have to deal with the monster. If everything I've seen about him is correct, he's going to try and freeze me next. I don't know how it works, but Ken mentioned that he may be able to 'steal' speed.

He slowly starts to turn in my direction. It's like he's not even treating this as a fight at all.

Mmmm.
Kaori is dreaming again, and she's pulling me into her dream.

We're in a large, grassy field now. The sun is shining, the beautiful grass waves in the breeze, in the distance is the sound of a running river.

I love dreams like this. They're way better than the dreams I used to have that were all weird and scary. It's amazing Kaori was able to fix my nightmares as completely as she has.

I am Itsukuma Masami, yesterday my sister was disowned by her not-father, and that made her understandably upset. I hate that man and everything he stands for, but she did live with him for years. It's like a part of her life has walked out on her.

I say this is better for her in the long run, but I'm not going to say that.

Speaking of which, I'm in her dream and I don't see her anywhere. That's kind of odd.

"Sis!" I yell at the vast expanse of grass and flowers, "Where are you?"

Nothing, only the gentle wisps of wind against the field of grass.

"Kaori!" I yell again, this is really weird.
Could it be.. that I'm dreaming this by myself?

"Kaori?!"
The bed is empty, her uniform is gone, the door is lazily hanging open. Kaori is no where to be found.
Where could she have gone?

The chairman flips the lights to the other rooms on as he passes by a panel on the wall. The whole time, he has the stone-cold gaze that I've come to known him for. The look on his face that is completely unable, or unwilling, to convey any kind of emotional reprise.

I'm not sure how someone can go their whole without emotion. Maybe his face is just stuck.

I am Itsukuma Masami, and today I've followed my sister to Fortune to see her father. I don't really trust the man, and I don't understand why Sis even wants to see him again.
From everything she told me about him, he treated her like garbage. Why she's suddenly feeling homesick now is beyond me.

But, he did keep his word. He's meeting my sister, alone, no bodyguards or ambush planned. In fact, he didn't even meet on the floor that had all the guards patrolling. He doesn't even have anyone in here spying on them!

Meanwhile, I'm listening in on their conversation completely unseen. It makes me wonder if I'm not a hypocrite.

"Dad.." Kaori starts out nearly choking out her words. "I just..."

Just 'what', Kaori?
She rubs her eyes furiously and looks back to him. She tries to put on the best serious face that a little girl with reddened eyes can manage.

"I WANT TO KNOW IF EVER THOUGHT OF ME AS YOUR DAUGHTER!"

...
Really? That's what she wanted to know?
Technically, he isn't actually her "Father". We both know that. It's like with my "Dad", I don't think he's really my father. I just think of him that way.

..I wonder if he thinks of me the same way? Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever asked him.

Okay, I should start with the easiest places to investigate. I don't want to waste my time exploring empty rooms with no one in them.

I walk into the first room and am immediately hit with the smell of cigarette smoke. It seems to have washed into everything. Including the walls and the two pieces of furniture in the room.
There's a computer with a dimly lit screen that appears to be on standby.
Gently, I tap the keyboard and wake the computer up. Which is when I notice that the screen is open to an email client of some kind. An email client with a single email is open for all to see.

"50th floor. Now. - T."

That's all it says. It also appears to have been dated for a few minutes ago.
Carefully I walk back out of the room. I really don't want that stench soaking into my clothes as it is.

Okay, that was a wash, what about the second room?
This one looks more like a traditional office. There's a complete set of office furniture, a computer that seems to have had a lot of usage, and a wall-clock.

Huh, the wall-clock isn't ticking anymore.
I try to wake the computer from its sleep, but am immediately foiled by a locked screen. This might be the Chairman's office. It's really hard to tell around here.

That's when I notice something, laying on the table is a well-worn sheet of paper that seems to have a series of brief memos written on it. Each one makes the list seem more like appointments. Three in particular are well-worn and smeared on the page, like they've been referred to often.
Harry - 12:00
Michelle - 5:00
Sally - 8:00

Strange.

I walk out of this room and into the third room, which is completely empty. Sans for imprints on the floors and walls where furniture used to be.
And, strangely enough, something is casting a shadow on the empty wall even though there is nothing mounted there. What a weird room.

>Do something in any of these three rooms?

"Okay!" Kaori leaps from her seat. "If I can meet with him today, then that's exactly what I'm going to do!"

"Ah? Where you going!?" I yell back at her.
"To get ready! I can get there within an hour or so if I hurry!"
"But-! Wait!"

I am Itsukuma Masami, and today my sister has decided to go someplace dangerous by herself with no one accompanying her. All with the goal of meeting her father, who is a shiftless man to begin with.
Also, she insists on being completely alone when she meets him.

I wonder if this is what a normal sister is like.

"Kaori! Wait!", but it's too late, she already ran into our room and slammed the door behind her.
"I'm just saying- Shouldn't we wait and find out a little more about this!? This seems very sketchy!"

She shouts from the other side of the door, "There's no time! It'll take me an hour to get there as I am right now!"
"But- Wait!"

With that, she flings the door open. Revealing that she's completely changed into her school uniform in the span of only a few seconds. With a skip, she nearly runs me over as she darts to the front door and flings it open.

"ThanksMomI'llBeBackInACoupleHoursBye!"
"Wait!" Mom yells behind her, but Kaori has already left by then.

"Hmph." I pout, "Well, if Kaori thinks she can get there in an hour, I can get there in less than two minutes!"
Mom and the monster, who hasn't excused himself yet, seem a little shocked by my defiance.
"Masami, she said she didn't want anyone following her"
"I'm not following her! I'm just going the same place she's going!"
Yes. Perfect.

"Masami, wait." Mom says with seriousness in her voice.

The atmosphere is tense. It feels like things could blow out of control at any minute. Which is in stark contrast to the otherwise peaceful courtyard where nothing of interest ever happens.

This monster is staring me down, and he wants nothing more than a fight with me. My friends have come out of their hiding place to watch, though I'm not sure what they can do to help me at this point.

While I don't think the monster can sneer, it certainly seems to be trying. It slices the air several times with its rapier before leveling it straight toward me.

"Engarde" the last word spoken between us, and he's the one who gets to say it.

I am Itsukuma Masami, and today I've been challenged to a duel! Until a few minutes ago, I wasn't really sure what one was. Now that I've been challenged to one by a monster, I'm slowly starting to learn.
I'm not really sure why this particular monster is so eager to fight me. He's a bodyguard for some big-shot at Fortune. And he's one of the few monsters I've met who has a name. Plus, he's also super strong as well. That's all I know about him.

"Come on, Priestess. I don't have all day!" He slices the air a couple more times. He must be waiting for me to go on the offensive.

I look around us, glancing at my friends who have come to spectate our match. All of them seem worried, eager, or at least anxious.

"Masami, don't you think that's enough?" Kaori says, with a lazy yawn.
"No, no I do not."

That's about three cards so far.
I'm really not sure if that's enough, but it's at least a good start.

I am Itsukuma Masami, and I've had a very long day. Fortunately, things seem to be looking up for me! My sister found a way to make blank cards, which I can shape into superpowers! I can't think of a better gift for Christmas!

Well, except the three bracelets she stole that can give other people superpowers. If she didn't steal them, I would think those things would be the greatest Christmas gift.

"Masamiii, how much longer?" Aiko is also yawning, staring at the clock on her phone.
To be fair, we've been making new cards for hours. It's almost 10 PM, and I'm not even sure that I WANT to fight the super-powered grunts who claim they are coming to take the bracelets tomorrow.
But... it's better to be prepared. So even if nobody fights, then I can always use the cards for something.

"Not much longer." I say, stifling a yawn. I don't want to admit it, but making so many cards in such a short amount of time is really wearing on me. I've never made more than one at a time before, now I've made three and it feels like I'm going to collapse.

>Pick what the three cards do, their powers, their utility, maybe someone who would be good with them.
>And
>Decide a plan of action for confronting the monsters tomorrow. Going to ambush them? Talk them down? Ask for a duel? Maybe just give them a bracelet or three?

"How do I know what you're saying is even true!?" I yell, my face is starting to fluster. There's a part of me that urgently wishes to flee.

I am Itsukuma Masami, and I was walking home from my first normal day at school; accompanied by my mostly normal friends. Aiko and Maeda are now standing several steps ahead of me, shielding me from another monster that has decided to attack.

Except, this monster doesn't want to fight. Instead, he has come here to talk to me about things. Things such as him being a part of my family, and me being born as the same type of monster that he is.

Of course, none of that can be true.

I am Itsukuma Masami, and I'm dreaming again, but something feels oddly different this time.

There's an endless sea of water at complete rest, just below my feet. I can feel a barrier of some kind, completely invisible, that is keeping me from falling into the endless ocean. A dull light rests just at the horizon, illuminating the sea and everything resting on top of it.
While everything is plainly visible, there isn't much to observe here. Just myself, the suit that I found myself wearing earlier, and a shadowy figure that stands between me and the suit. The elegant fabric floats a small distance above the water, as if held aloft by some unseen force.

It's probably a ghost, and I must be having a nightmare.

I put the other card away, and then take the other card into my hand.
That's strange, the black marking on it has changed. The black mark has turned into an X marking, the corners of the card almost dripping with the substance that composes the inky void in the face of it.

"So, same thing as last time?" I ask
"Let's both try, at the same time." She says, approaching me.

Mom's hand raises up to the card, she gently presses her finger on the corner.
Wait, the ink on the card, it's rippling?

"OW!" Mom's hand draws back as she inspects her finger.

"What happened!?" I lose focus of the card for a second.

"I-I, um." Mom gazes at her finger, and I get a look at it too, seems to be a small cut of some kind?
"I think it was just a papercut." She says, laughing softly.

I look back at the card, and the ink has shifted AGAIN, now it's trying to regroup at the other end of the card where I'm holding it.

I let go of the card instinctively, it's now floating in mid-air.
Mom's face goes slightly pale.

That's a bad sign, I should get started.
