>new guy joins the group
>pretty chill, fun to be with
>We're doing a oneshot, he just uses a prefab character
>Eventually we get to combat, his turn comes up
>Looks down at his sheet
>"What's a javelin?"
>He even pronounces it jay-vleen

>Be me
>Forever DM
>Homebrew world, put a lot of detail into it but nothing Tolkien-level
>Not terribly smart but not retarded either
>Players are all scientists and engineers (with a single engineering major in a very competitive program), smartasses but cool and friendly

>Party gets lost in a jungle-like forest
>Unfortunately, none of them brought a compass
>Start discussing how to use shadows to determine direction
>Fuck it, this seems like too fun a scenario for such an easy solution
"Uhh, the trees are too thick to see shadows, it's all dark"
>One of them gets the bright idea to fill a tin with water and float a needle on it (possibly with a leaf) to find the in-universe equivalent of North
>They spend 10 solid minutes arguing over how the planet's biome proves that there must be a magnetic field blocking the solar wind, and therefore poles to be used as N/S/E/W indicators, mostly minutiae about ions and shit I don't understand
>Student offhandedly remarks how the magnetic field might oscillate based on "the internal kinematics of the planet's metal core" or whatever
>Then they discuss plate tectonics for 10 minutes and how the geography of my homebrew continent means plates shift much more rapidly than normal
>Then they unironically (but in a friendly manner) comment how this means my world is unrealistic since capital cities wouldn't be built on fault lines
>I throw a few monsters at them to end this conversation (and I like rolling dice)
>Obviously they're all minmaxers, but I give them a good challenge
>I let them use their compass trick and let them leave the forest
