Imagine how much smarter ordinary people might be if contemporary high school math courses had a written component. Like... if students had to write formal essays 'n shit rather than just brute forcing their way through hundreds of meaningless problems. What do you think?

That's a rather very good idea. It's basically what my five semesters of analysis were, but doing it at HS level would probably improve a lot.

My 11th grade math and English teachers occasionally collaborated on integrated units that incorporated aspects of the two disciplines. I found it fascinating.

yeah, stuff like trig and algebra should be erased from the curriculum, they teach no logical thinking and instead force you to memorize in which way to bruteforce equations while developing no understanding of anything
i'd replace the written component with mandatory logic classes though

can't you just have them write trig and algebra proofs instead

What would the essays be about though? History of mathematics?

>What do you think?
An absolutely retarded Idea, beyond my comprehension.

>Imagine how much smarter ordinary people might be if contemporary high school math courses had a written component.
Firstly, what the fuck would you write about and why?
If you understand the concepts writing them out is a pointless, boring task, if you don't you can't anyway.

>brute forcing
That word has a meaning, dumb fuck.
You don't brute force a problem, if you actually understand the Ideas behind it.

What schools *should* do it give the student the Intuition behind the Problems, sadly most teachers are incompetent idiots who don't even understand the Intuition themselves.
If you have the Intuition, the Problems will become trivial and if you don't then either you are dumb or your teacher is shit.
There is no point to waste time writing essays.

>Imagine how much smarter
This is what I really take Issue with, this is plain idiocy.
No, people won't get smarter because they have to write essays.
Highschool is mostly daycare and a bit of preparation for college, nothing in that makes you "smart".

>'n shit
Fuck off Nigger, at least try to speak English.

This makes no sense. You can't erase algebra or trig from the curriculum because you need these absolutely everywhere. That would be like removing grammar or spelling from the elementary school curriculum. I agree that it could be done differently though.

You've clearly never had to prepare a class/article/talk. You can definitely learn a lot about a subject by writing it up from scratch, even if you think you know it very well.

>You've clearly never had to prepare a class/article/talk.
I did.

>You can definitely learn a lot about a subject by writing it up from scratch
What you *should* do it get students to explain it to others, if you actually manage to do that then you WILL see a good effect.
But writing essays is just a worse form of that, you are trying to explain the concept to the teacher, who hopefully understands it anyway, instead of your fellow students who you can relate to significantly better.

The Problem with the whole debacle is that I have very rarely seen such a thing work in my school years, in University, where everyone is at least slightly interested in the subject, it works quite well.

Students should be made to prepare slide presentations teaching the others about a given concept. The students should then compare their presentations to see which presentation teaches the concept best (Which one explained best, told the most, was most engaging, etc. and what makes it that way) and write essays on why that is so for extra credit in english class.

Mathematicians don't write well. In writing the whole point is to be as clear clear and straight to the point with as little words as possible. No math book has ever achieved this. Mathematicians write to be needlessly complex to stroke their egos in a masterbatory fashion.

No one will be able to do Calculus based Physics.
Without basic High School Math like Arithmetic, Algebra, Trigonometry, Matrices, Combinatorics

To prove all of them from axioms all way up to Real & Complex Analysis might be useful for deep understanding.

However you will certainly need to be able to fast calculations & solve equations quickly for Physics problems.
