So found this article which stays walking barefoot has benefits to health and in fighting disease. It states: "You are an electrical being — your body regularly produces positive charges, which can oxidize and harm you if it is excessive. The Earth’s surface is electrically conductive; it maintains a negative charge with its free electron supply continually replenished by the global atmospheric electrical circuit" and "To put it simply, it’s thought that the influx of free electrons from the Earth’s surface will help to neutralize free radicals and reduce both acute and chronic inflammation, which is at the root of many health conditions and accelerated aging".

kek. However, your foot has spent millions of years being the by-product of evolution and natural selection, so it's a pretty damn great piece of machinery. Wearing shoes is actually bad for bones/joints/limbs (to an extent,) especially while running.

Most running shoes bend and contort the foot into a shape that will do damage over time, which is why I run barefoot.

tldr your foot is already really well put together, shoes only hinder the performance.

No.

But barefoot feels good. I've done the barefoot running thing, here are the pitfalls:

1. stress fractures because your shit isn't conditioned, running on hard surfaces, or stepping down on hard objects. Improper form can transmit damage to your joints up the leg.

2. Avulsion fractures- thats when your toe gets bent in one direction and the tendon pulls on the bone and a piece of the bone breaks off.

3. Hairline fractures, bruising, contusions, sprains. 26 bones available in the foot for immediate pain going toward chronic, long term disability.

... and walking:

1. Broken glass, its everywhere. 1st, its painful, 2nd, possibility of infection.

2. Even the most glancing blow to the toes can be incredibly painful.

3. a blow easily absorbed by a shoe turns into a long-term injury

In short, yes, your feet are weak and vulnerable from a lifetime in shoes. If you go without you better go easy and be careful, as some level of injury is practically guaranteed.

The newer Vibram type shoes have a much more substantial sole and thicker for protection.

Going without anything on your feet guarantees your shit will get fucked up.

You can achieve bulletproof bare feet, but only after years of constant conditioning and probably genetics.

Put simply, free radicals are very reactive species formed as a result of respiration. They'll react with just about anything in your body, which can obviously be damaging when they start tearing away DNA molecules etc.

For whatever reason, both free radicals and antioxidants (chemicals that 'mop up' free radicals) became fairly well-known, meaning medicine quacks started working them into their rationales.

Only like 4 million years but habitual bipedalisam wasn't really set in for about the past 2.5 million. We are still poorly adapted to bipedalisam. Walking and standing require far more energy than they should and our joints wear out prematurely because of it. Just look at how common joint damage is in athletes. We are a freak and you can bet early hominids had a great deal of pain in there older years as they where even less well adapted.

thing about going barefoot is that 90% of your day is spent on very hard solid man-made surfaces.

your feet are meant for uneven terrain like soil and dirt and sand. soft stuff.

even rocky areas in the wild are still craggy and not perfectly flat. and in a nature scenario, you wouldn't be on a surface like that for too long anyway.

so if you live in the woods, or by it, by all means, go barefoot. if you don't have access to that, its just not a good idea, your feet aren't designed for concrete and pavement
