My physics professor said that he will not look at anything marked wrongly on an exam if you do not write in pen. Is this fair?

I am just seeing myself in two fucking shitty situations..one where I do the work all properly in pencil and get the right answer and he marks it wrong by his own mistake but then refuses to remark it, and one where I use pen and go through a problem, realize i went about doing it the wrong way, and then have absolutely no fucking space to redo the problem quickly, not to mention scratches and messiness everywhere.

what would be the smartest option?

If you don't do it in a permanent medium, what exactly prevents you from, after receiving your exam back, changing your work and claiming it was marked incorrectly? Only fair way to allow regrades is to demand pen.

i have never used a pen for anything in my life. my eraser is my brother.

Do you guys think it'd be safer to just do it in pencil and ensure that my solutions are as how i want them, with no "errors" and scratching and permanentness, or taking the risk of doing a solution wrong and needing an erase?

obviously i should aim to not do a solution wrong, but fuck sometimes i just go about doing it an overly hard way and see an easier way in teh end

In all likelihood, your professor is not going to make a mistake in grading your work, and indeed is actually more likely to do so if your work is scattered and hard to follow. How you got this far without being able to manage your space in such a way to have extra space in case you make a mistake, or scratch paper to work it out first before writig it down, I'll never know. But doing it in pencil should be fine.

i guess thats a good way of thinking about it. How do you organize your page/subconsciously organize your shit? my shit is always all over the place. I kinda just write wherever there is empty space

What the fuck is up with this thread?

I have done all my tests in pencil. Teacher gives back test. If something is marked incorrectly, immediately tell teacher before being given answer.

If teacher lets you make corrections (a redo), then you do those in pen.

I feel like people are trying to overcomplicate this...

This. You don't have to write out the whole thing on scrap paper, but getting a sketch down really helps. You should do this anyway, because
a) you'll find any mistakes you made as you transcribe; and
b) you won't have smudgy/scribbly solutions, making your graders grateful and therefore more lenient.

It doesn't even take significantly more time. You don't have to do it for every question, even... just the ones where you might make mistakes.

How long do you fucking take to do an exam?

I do all my exams in pencil and if the particular professor would rather have it in pen then I just write with pen on top and proceed to erase the pencil marks.
