You don't do the repetitions to understand the concept. You can get the concept right off the bat, but you still need to do repetitions. You do practice to internalize it and to develop confidence and efficiency so when test time comes, you don't crack under the pressure of time constraints.

When I was in grad school (as a stepping stone for getting a job) I'd prepare for my weekly 3 hour seminar by studying 3-6 hours the night before.

Over 2 years I basically just studied my main field for 15 minutes a day on average.
