Hello /sci/, I come to you with a very important questions. My whole life I have lived ignorant to the world of numbers and sciences. Those fields have never interested me until recently, now that I have realized the power and potential of various maths and sciences. Here is my ordeal. My highest math is Algebra. Ever since I realized the usefulness of maths and how cool and interesting it is I have been really dedicated to devote every second of spare time to studying math in hopes that I will eventually be able to get into the fields of physics, astrophysics and quantum field theory and mechanics. I plan on teaching myself the maths necessary for these fields through books and college. I am 19 years old right now and I wanted to get your opinion on where I should begin and how I should progress. Also, do you think it is to late for me to learn all of these sciences and maths? Please, any advice/help would be appreciated.

listening to lectures at that speed is risky if you wanna study for a test and need to comprehend the material.

Why would you want to train these things in this manner? Surely time is better spent studying relevant material.

OP here.
My current study strategy is to study and develop a strong sense of algebra fundamentals and to also read the origins of Algebra, I will also be looking at the lectures from online and Kahn Academy. Do you have any other study tips that will help me fully understand the concepts better? Is this the right study path?

>> No.5809654

>>5809633
If you mean 6th grade algebra, then I don't think it's that important to have a strong sense of the fundamentals. Just understand how to do algebra and go on to more advanced stuff, which is more important for physics.

If you mean algebra as in functions in a Cartesian plane, you should probably just go through enough to learn calculus. When you learn linear algebra and mathematical analysis in the future, you'll expand your understanding of what a "function" actually is into a much deeper picture than you can get with just high school algebra.

If you want to learn the history of math, then I'd recommend a book called "History of mathematical thought from ancient to modern times" or something like that. It's a great book.

i had a friend in a similar situation. i tried to tell him to just khan academy through the lower level stuff before taking placement tests but he didnt listen

hes now in alg2 while taking discrete math. strangest shit i've ever heard but seems to be doing fine other than taking a crapload of remedial shit before he can take calc/physics to transfer

i would suggest being honest with yourself and do book learning at least through alg2. understand it fully to the point where you can slice through any algebra like butter. if you cant understand book go to khan academy or something and learn there.

Anon, i was also included maths of all kind, meaning i won't stop learning it at a certain point. I also see no problem of applying math. If you can't apply math then there is no need for it.

I just want to know why the operations and formulas work for algebra and I thought the fundamentals would be a good place of understanding the reasoning of the formulas. Also I will look into that book.

Well, i'm only at a JC and I already took a placement test and scored into Algebra I. That's what I want, the skill to see any Algebra and know how to apply my tools to solve them with ease

Also search how to learn maths on https://archive.installgentoo.net/sci; there are some great threads there.

math is abstract, i realize this. some math doesn't have applications in the real world but apply to other maths to make maths better, the abstract math would also consequently apply to maths that deal with reality.

Pure math is just physics without any connection to the real world.

Pure math is completely just the product of the human mind. The human mind is a product of neural circuits, which can be studied with biology. Biology is just applied chemistry, and chemistry is applied physics. So in the end, pure math is just applied physics.

Not really what I was doing. The idea that maths is 'useless' if it can't be applied is precisely equivalent to any of those other things. Maths is good because I like it. Same as sex, art, music. If you don't like it, its not good to you, but it doesn't make it pointless.
