I was wondering if anyone on /sci/ has had experience with meditation/mindfulness. I'm interested in pursuing it as a way to improve my concentration and observation skills, but also want to steer clear of some of the more overtly mystical and psuedoscientific parts of it. Anyone have any helpful resources along these lines?

One big difference is that meditation doesn't necessarily demand unscientific beliefs about the Universe. The basis of things like prayer is that the worshiper is supposedly in communication with gods or saints or spirits, which makes unscientific claims about the reality of such beings.

Meditation can be a training method of observation about one's sensory inputs and thought process, and as such isn't making unsubstantiated claims about reality. For example, meditation needs no spirits or past lives to commune with, so there's no implication that spirits or reincarnation exist.
