I've heard people complaining the science behind Mythbusters isn't sound in most experiments. Is /sci/ for or against Mythbusters? I actually quiet enjoy the show myself

>> No.2883120

The problem is when average folks take what they do on mythbusters and associate it with real science. It's not.

>> No.2883125

If I'm going to watch tv, I'd take a well acted dramatic piece over this any day.

The entertainment value is just higher for me.

>> No.2883128

I wouldn't bet my life on their results but I like the show.

They do a better job with rigor than almost anyone else (on TV), but a lot of their experiments are flawed, sure.

Worse than that, though, is the fact that they ran out of good ideas about 5 seasons ago around the time they decided they only wanted to do a half hour show (and gave the other half hour to those 3 annoying jerkoffs)

>> No.2883168

>>2883120
They do use the scientific method to a degree. Also going into detail about everything would bore most people who watch the show.

>> No.2883176

Some of the results are bullshit, but it's a good show.

>> No.2883201

great show but for fucks sake, not every episode needs an explosion

>> No.2883217

EVERY MYTHBUSTERS EPISODE EVER

1) Introduce "myth" (i.e. youtube video) that noone really cares about and is obviously bullshit.
2) Recreate circumstances, run test, test obviously fails, waste 20 minutes of everyone's time.
3) Use special effects experience to recreate fake video.
4) Blow something up.

i'm kind of annoyed that i can't prove this with a video but here's something they 'busted' that happened to me:

back in one of my high school tech classes, the cd drive started spinning really fast and the cd inside shattered. the shrapnel hit a couple of people but there were no serious injuries, just a couple of cuts

this happened AFTER the mythbusters busted this, so we lol'd

'Murkans love explosions. They don't want to sit around and "learn" on the discovery channel. Since we don't get shows of animals eating each other anymore, shitty work shows and explosions are the only things keeping Discovery Channel alive.

>> No.2883236

fun show to watch, their methods are often shockingly bad though.

Is that why the nature shows are gone? Some fucktard soccer mom wrote a letter complaining that her precious little snowflake was being traumatized by video of half-eaten gazelles?

(GIS'd "lion eating gazelle" and found this. someone evidently thought the gazelle's balls were the most offensive part of this picture...)

They smashed a car against a wall and then said if they smashed that car against another car going at the same speed that it would double the force. If was only after fans pointed out Newton's third law that those fucking bimbos mentioned their mistake.

>> No.2883270

They ran out of myths a loooong fucking time ago. Now they just try and test shit that is obviously real or false.

Ex: they try and curve bullets like in the movie Wanted....like, curve their trajectory a noticeable amount (don't cite some diffraction as curving, 1E-48m curving doesn't count)

>> No.2883275

>>2883260
yeah. i saw this one where they were throwing these dummies off a truck to test something, and it was so fucking ghetto. they must have had a budget of like $40 for that episode. I wouldn't watch it because i don't want to be strung along for 30 minutes to discover some trivial bullshit that I already knew.

-double barreled gun.
-right barrel shoots bullet
-left barrel shoots super powerful magnet at a very slightly lower speed
-as bullet passes magnet, it wraps around the magnet and turns to the left

No, those shows are gone because they don't draw in as many viewers as the other programs.

discovery channel, much like all other channels before, started out as a niche channel for people interested in educational and scientific programming, but has since decayed into a mishmash of TV drama and explosions.

At this point, I've just given up on TV. Canceled all subscriptions, and don't even bother with it. Too much bullshit everywhere. Waste of time anyways, after watching TV for a few hours my brain always felt like mush.

TV is well and fully more boring than 4chan.

>> No.2883369

They have an occasional cringeworthy show in which they screw something up, or miss something obvious. In particular I've found that their 'sponsored' type shows (like when they have cops there to help them prove something the cops would like the public to believe, like speed guns are infallible) are crap.

For the most part it's entertaining though, which is the point.

>he actually thinks TV is a better time waster than 4chan

If I spend 4 hours watching TV, it'll be 3.8 hours of flipping channels and watching commercials, and .2 hours of actually watching a show.

Fuck television. The internet has provided me with more fun, interactivity and knowledge than TV ever has.

>> No.2883572

>>2883376
Y'know, they have this miraculous device called a "DVR" nowadays that eliminates 99% of the time wasting due to commercials and nothing being on and so on...

In the old days they had VCRs that did much the same thing, but they weren't quite as convenient.

>> No.2883590

The only reason I don't like the show is because they have the greatest job in the fucking world. Who cares if they aren't truly adhering to scientific methods?

I want to blow shit up for a living.

>> No.2883719

You know what's even more convenient than a DVR?

The fucking internet.

1. Don't pay for any lame television subscriptions
2. Buy movies/DVD's online for cheap
3. Pirate shit

I don't even bother pirating/buying television shows or movies anyways. 99% of them suck to begin with, and I get by just fine with other forms of entertainment. Like arguing with people over the internet.

>> No.2883738

Tv shows are supposed to be entertaining.
It _is_ entertaining.
Therefore it's a good show.
Not particularly scientific though, but it'd be boring if it was
