Can't remember who did this but this was the concept:

Put a small microphone in your ear. Put a speaker in a certain position. Play trough all frequencies and figure out how your head/ear structure distorts the signals. Apply these distortions to a sound and play it trough headphones.

The sound would be perfectly calibrated to your particular head structure and should give superior directional sound sensation.
