>Glass is liquid
Isn't that based on a misinterpretation of pieces of glass in stained glass windows from the middle ages being thicker on the bottom than the top? If so, the glass was produced that way and there have been many cases found where they were installed wrong so the thicker part of the glass is up instead of down.

Yes glass is solid and the misconception comes from that example, but also wrong because the creep was real and observed both in the glass and the metal (especially lead and low-melting alloys). The thicker parts are always lower because they suffer creep under gravity. This applies to metals as well, and is strongly related to the temperature.

Deformation occurs in solids as well, just much slower. The definition of "solids" was inadequate.

But this doesn't disprove it's a solid. Just that it got compressed under it's own weight. Bottom being under higher compression load since it supports more weight above.

Material scientist here:
There is a definition that says that glass is an "undercooled liquid". But it doesn't mean that glass itself is liquid. It's an amorphous solid.
If you view Cp/T curves, or V/T curves, you will see a glass transistion point, where it becomes solid. It does not move, it just does not have a long range order of atoms.

Making some cost effective lightweight metal alloy. Right now the fad lies within Magnesium, however the periodic system still has some room to spare, with Beryllium being the final frontier

>> No.15603905

>>15603901
Is this for aerospace? I'm curious about why beryllium is the final frontier.

>> No.15603917

>>15603905
Not just for aerospace. Metals are generally the strongest reliable materials, and being able to use lightweight metals makes everything that needs to be moved cost effective. Cars, Planes, rockets.
That's the reason magnesium is now the fad since its even lighter than aluminum. The problem with Mg currently is that since it's hexagonal, its very brittle, which means you can only cast it. There are some projects on how to add rare earths or Lithium to improve the properties and make Magnesium fully usable.
Beryllium is a row higher on the table of elements, which makes it even lighter, while still being strong. Lithium is too soft at this point, so Be is the ideal technological limit of lightweight materials.
