It doesn't reason, it just generates gibberish text as though it's translating text between English and what's in its model and back again and it tricks your brain into thinking it's meaningful because for a certain restricted class of inputs and outputs it returns the right results, and the syntax is superficially correct because it's a gloss of what it translated.
