OP isn't wrong but that is the nature of pure research. You never know what will work or could become useful eventually. The problem theoreticians have at the moment is there is no new physics that CERN had produced since the LHC was finished so all they are left with is guessing.

What it did was further prove an already well-tested and confirmed theory and also give some new data on aspects of the standard model only specialists care about.

Any speculative "faulty" theories it could be considered to test were already thought up decades ago and none of the price tag of the LHC went to those theorists.
