12316665 No.12316665 [Reply] [Original]

Hi everyone. A few friends and I started back a study group over the summer and have gone through a couple topics. Now we've decided to take a look at reading Brian C. Hall's book on Lie Algebra, Lie Groups, and Representation Theory.

We meet once weekly over VC/text to talk about the book. But if anyone is interested, you're welcome to join. We haven't started the book yet (in case anyone here wants to join), but plan to talk maybe a little about the applications to physics without watering down the pure mathematics. For now, we're focused on covering Lie Algebras. We talk maths, formerly.

>TL;DR - Doing a Lie Algebra reading group with a few friends using Brian Hall's book. We meet once a week over VC/text. Haven't started the book yet. You're welcome to join.

Lie groups should never be studied for their own sake without a clear motivation in mind. The theory should be picked up along the way as you actually apply it it to interesting things.

Towards semester end. But the first few meetings will be light discussion. Since this thread may very well be up until late next week, we will probably spend next saturday (The 14th of Nov) talking shortly about Clifford Algebra, which isn't a prerequisite for anything but more so functions as a chance for everyone to collect.

Our first meeting on the book itself will be on November 21st, where we'll discuss prerequisites for the first chapter of the book quickly and then speak about the 8 important groups the author introduces, touch on topology and, if we have time, touch on the definition of lie groups. That is the aim of the November 21st meeting.
