Literally nothing is more useful to humanity than producing virtual reality.

Why aren't there trillions being poured into it?

Who gives a damn about the real world if you can generate your own personal paradise.

Current virtual reality hardware is a gigantic meme.
The only feasible futuristic way to create virtual reality is to either create lasers that shine imagery unto your eyes, or neural implants that activate specific neurons to trick your brain into seeing fake imagery.
The first could be researched, but requires vast improvements of eye-tracking technology, while the second will take at least a few decades to develop.

Our organs are separated from the outside world by layers of skin, membrane and bone and our brain is encased in total darkness its whole existence, only really interacting with the outside world through fairly rudimentary (and unreliable) senses. Does it really matter if the box is metal rather than bone? Forming direct mental connections harnessing some kind of theoretical advanced tech would actually feel less isolating.

All your organs are necessary to keep you alive its not a cage. Bone makes blood, which goes to the brain, its all one system.

In my opinion fake reality is lame. Your actions would be limited and have no impact. Not any different from watching tv or daydreaming. When you wake you be like "fuck i could've done the same shit irl and it would have been real instead of disappearing into nothing. What a waste of 5 billion years." Cuz you could have progressed instead of stagnating.

And another thing, if you like science and discovery, that could be the end. If you are simulating the world, you can't conduct observations or do experiment beyond what is known. No more frontier. There are so many mysteries about the physical world, and they would remain unresolved. We wouldn't be able to go beyond the imagination.

Yall are just depressed and have few interests. So you're only interested in enhancing your existing gamer and weeb lifestyles, and that's all that matters.

Trillions would on be poured, if there were trillions to be made. Someone would have to stand to gain a lot of power. And at that point, you should be, very, very afraid.

2 problems I see with this-
Either you know it's all fake when you sign up, and that underlying understanding will ruin every action as your realize how futile, meaningless and empty everything you do is. Even if they can erase your memory, that means they'll have to create a whole world for you from scratch with minimal user input, and those scenarios will eventually repeat. Characters would repeat.
What a fucking catastrophe someone's world would be if they joined at the age of 1. Can't even speak, read, write, or socialize. They wouldn't fit in with the simulation very well.

Secondly, what of the social interactions? You're just gonna ignore the most fundamental part of the human experience and make us hang out with gay AI algorithms? Or keep us in contact with family and friends that eventually leads to the drama we were escaping?
I don't think we can fix the pain of missing someone by injecting more dopamine.

Thirdly, won't we eventually just burn out our dopamine receptors? Especially if we try fixing any pain by just flooding more dopamine in?

Fourthly, as soon as you enter this machine, you stop growing. There's no lessons learned if everything works out all the time, especially if you break physics doing it. And if you're cut off from other minds, than you'll never have any more input than what you came up with. Objectively whatever future you have in here will be worse than the future we had on the outside working together.

Premise of OP
>Who gives a damn about the real world
However if you had people in vr conducting experiments irl the same way NASA scientists use the mars rover you could advance the science enterprise. There would be limitations though. In the same way that drones and robots helped volcanologists, but did not replace them visiting sites.
Pretty sure there are many cases where it would just be easier to step out of vr and get the job done. Vr seems more like a useful tool than a replacement for reality.

You are partially correct op, it will be a major part of future reality (sans MAD, total social collapse, enslavement, etc.)

People seeking immortality will eventually realize it will be way easier to simply preserve the only part of the human that matters: the brain. After this, flesh interfaces and wetware systems (neuralink being gen1) will become common. Many will simply choose to hook their thinky bits into a vast server (likely when their bodies start to break down anyway) a bit like >>12104625 except less meat. These people will basically live inside the internet. Realms of pure pleasure will be the evolution of the coomer, but not everybody will choose to exist this way forever.

Many will choose to inhabit Android or drone bodies physically or control them wirelessly from their server room and live in the physical reality. Possibly even explore the stars (much easier to keep one organ alive than an entire body).

Automated machines and drones will pretty much take care of everything else.

If VR could replicate reality perfectly, then low IQ people are the ones who will be the most susceptible to this and that's great because they'd remove themselves from reality voluntarily. Instead of drug addicts and criminals roaming the streets you'd have VR addicts who won't bother anyone IRL and they'll be unlikely to reproduce too because they'd have sex in VR meaning it's a soft form of eugenics too.
