Are ya hanging in there?
Currently waiting for reviewer comments and wondering if my labmates are going to be chuds by the next time I see them.

Codemonkey-ish PhD positions are good career choices IMO, you'll finish and be able to do more interesting coding work afterwards

I'm thinking about starting a PhD at age 33.
Is this ok or is it too late.
No industry experience. Just now getting bachelor's.

>> No.11871848

>>11871843
if you want to do it, then do it. It's maybe a little late if you're thinking of going to postdoc and academia, but if you're going to stop with a PhD then I don't see why not.

>> No.11871849

It’s funny cuz this thread has the same abbreviation as grand strategy general where I spent most of my free time when I was in grad school

Was thinking about getting a PhD and then going to do research at one of the national labs.
I guess the main issue I see is that I'd be starting my career at 40.

I'm not sure. I would think as long as your PhD is from a strong university then you could get a national lab job. But I don't think professorship would be a good route.

Keep in mind national lab jobs don't pay that much and there's hardly any upward mobility. But if you like the work then go for it.

That isn't what I asked.
Also your metrics don't have any meaning if you aren't giving counter-examples.
Like of course it's easy for a 15 year old kid to claim that a $100K salary is mediocre but I don't see many people realistically exceeding much more than that.

Not him but being relative to cost of living is the most important thing; I can clear 200k in Boston (realistically I'm not burning a hole in my stomach with those jobs) but the city itself is expensive as shit

I said national labs don't pay that much (which is true, they don't pay much because you're essentially a glorified lab tech for your whole life)

Jumping in to say salary isn't everything. Consider where you'll be and the general cost of living in that area.

What sorta salary do PhD positions at national labs pay? Do they take anyone with a PhD in a loosely related field or just those who worked on topics that are directly applicable to the lab?
