>build a Martian-colony themed hotel there
>let families, fans, journalists, tourists etc stay there while they’re visiting to watch starship launches in the coming years

I mean come on, there are towns in Florida that have historically relied on tourism for the Kennedy space center launches, imagine the crowds for the first manned Mars missions and beyond. Brownsville is gonna boom

mech e here that works in aero, the undergrad course work is much harder than anything you have had to do prior and it will change the way you have to think (you have to begin to think like an engineer, very analytical) be prepared to work 12 hours a day a lot of days in undergrad (the sooner you learn something fundamentally the less work will be required)
For early work experience, getting an internship is honestly almost harder than getting a job. Interning just go in and do your best, ask a bunch of questions etc, early work once youre hired is really hands on for someones first job, you really get thrown in there so you have to understand your shit before going in or you're gonna be left behind.
Its a good field to go into, just be somewhat passionate for it and put in the work and it'll be find

It’s better than 4chan when you stick to subreddits dedicated to an extremely narrow topic, and the ability to look at someone’s history to see if they’re blatantly pushing an agenda is nice.

On the other hand, most of the larger subreddits are irredeemably full of politics and stupidity. Really not that different than a left-leaning version of /pol/, except it’s harder to write off the more ridiculous opinions as satire.

What's the point of persistent identity? I legit don't understand the draw to a non-anon site. Everything used to be anon, then as the normienet took hold everyone was expected to tie their irl identity to their internet posting and I've never understood the appeal.

Good way to put it, I love it. Lack of identity is a beautiful thing, I don't know if you're a biracial black transsexual midget and it isn't relevant if you were, the words you type in a post are the only thing that matters.

Theoretically, it gives people some pressure to act civilly as if their reputation is being judged like in a real, in-person conversation. Of course, in practice it just means that everything you’ve ever said has to conform to the increasingly left-leaning hive mind lest you face the wrath of mass downvotes.

>> No.11792473

It's so much simpler to merely judge an anon by the substance of their post. Your value is directly related to the quality of your post, and no other factor influences my opinion of what you have to say.
I'm hard-pressed to conceive of a superior system.

Sorry if we got offtopic there, just to bring it back around does anyone know specifically what that Electron just threw into orbit? All I know is that they were multiple minisats (cubesats?). Do we know any specifics? The Starlink launch in a few hours has a rideshare with a few ground-imaging satellites that advertise damn good resolution, like 200cm I think.

The satellite itself will deploy eight “pico-satellites” designed to resolve current densities at varying spatial resolutions in the near-Earth magnetosphere using measurements from Anisotropic Resistance Magnetometers, and relay information back to the central satellite. It is flying as part of NASA’s Educational Launch of Nanosatellites, or ELaNa program.

Rocket Lab is working on parachute catching boosters. If that works, it's a great way to scale up a rocket - you just add more boosters and hire more helicopter pilots. Are the fuel tanks in KSP heavier than real ones are proportionate to the fuel they carry? Starship’s proposed dry mass of 120,000 kilograms and wet mass of 1,320,000 kilograms seems unachievable with the mass ratio of the stock fuel tanks, and thus also its proposed delta/v

Sure, but delta/v works exactly the same way it does in KSP as it does in real life. Starship needs to have sufficient delta/v to perform a Mars injection burn and then land on Mars while carrying a 100 ton payload for its purpose to be fulfilled.
Assuming a 100 ton payload, a dry mass of 220 tons (120 tons of Starship and 100 tons of payload), a total mass of 1,420 tons, and Raptor’s specific impulse of 380, Starship has a delta/v of 6,949, which is plenty for this job, but if we assume that Starship’s proposed dry mass is an underestimation, and it ends up with a dry mass of, say, 200, it would have a delta/v of 5,997, which, I think, maybe, is still enough for the job, since a Mars injection burn costs 4,300 delta/v on average, and you can ignore delta/v for the capture since Starship is supposed to aerobrake. I’m not sure how much delta/v doing the landing would cost, though, because I’m sure they’ll exploit atmospheric drag, and with a dry mass of 250, it has a delta/v of 5545, which is even worse but might still be workable.

It's a simplification of the real term, which is "change in velocity", the greek delta in math means change, V is shorthand for velocity. At it's simplest, it represents how much any reaction engine (turbojet, piston, rocket, etc) can change the vehicle's velocity by burning through it's fuel/propellant load.
It's proportional to two factors, thrust per unit mass (How much thrust you can produce for a given amount of fuel/propellant consumed) and the total burn time (How long the engine can run before all of it's fuel/propellant is consumed).
This is why Thrust-to-Weight ratio and ISP are so important to consider for rocket design.

That's awesome, I had a dream too, but I just can't remember anything past that. My dreams are always me being in a semi common situation in my daily life, but with the crippling awareness that some detail is fatally wrong and great peril is imminent. I'm always so glad waking up that it was just a dream, but I prefer dreaming to not dreaming at all. I think it was also space related, but I can't make the connection. I was also waken up at 2am by my neighbor phoning somebody about her husband or boyfriend having been searched by the police, like 4 men were there, which is weird because another neighbor who moved out before she moved in had a similar event, with her husband trying to pickup his daughter, he seemed like a good guy, but she called the cops and I was just wrenching on my car in the parking lot, half the car in pieces, unable to overhear it. It's not the same apartment, but basically everybody since I moved in, moved out and I'm the longest residing person in the whole house at this point, after just one year. It's not even a bad neighborhood, oh well that fucking escalated...
I hope the guy wasn't an asshole, he seemed okay and his kid wanted to be with him.

Your speed (really velocity, but whatever) determines the altitude of your orbit. For a spacecraft, how much speed you can change (based off of your remaining fuel, engine characteristics, and mass) determines where you can go, so it’s a useful quantity to keep track of.

>> No.11793721

>>11793687
Delta/v is simply how much you can change your velocity. The higher the percentage of your craft that is propellant, the higher your delta/v is. Delta/v is also influenced heavily by specific impulse, which is essentially the fuel efficiency of a thruster.

If we imagine a hypothetical spaceship that weights 50 tons fully fueled and 10 tons empty, and has a thruster with a specific impulse of 450, it would have a delta/v of 7102, which is enough to put you into a low orbit of the Moon with fuel to spare. If it had a specific impulse of 350 instead, it would have a delta/v of 5524. You can save delta/v when landing or trying to enter an orbit of a planet by colliding with its atmosphere for atmospheric drag, which reduces your velocity without expending propellant. Very useful when going to Mars

You at least have a steady gig, mate.
Client wanted me to look out for a lost picket of theirs in the upper atmosphere of this unstable hellhole today, storms getting worse every week, but ok, isn't like there's much of a choice for freelancers lately... "freelancers" yea. I was flying IFR for hours, all static on all frequencies and my Mk3 developed this new rattling sound on pitch up, which is great... 6 hours in I get a massive reading, all noise from basically all sides, the dust clears and you won't believe it, I'm inside a shuttleport of a cooked Logasiri class escort carrier. Thrust reversal, almost went full goo. I wonder how this irradiated hulk ended up on an orbit here, declining, yes. But it'll take weeks to fully burn up.

I can hook you up with the telemetry, for a beer, and a share if you find something but again, it's cooked, good.
I had peaks of 16k rads without being anywhere near the reactor bay, but if your hopper is shielded...
Will head out again tomorrow to look for these fools, but at this point I may know what happened to them fuck knows what they were doing out there, not that I'm questioning this whole op here anymore.

Yeah ok I didn't want to be insensible.
Liberty ships were also pretty much on the edge of welding technology and they broke apart even more easily. These cruisers were still afloat because of their armored citadels while simultaneously being partially the reason for loosing it in the first place. That's because these areas were connecting the flimsier bows to sturdy midships which focuses all kinds of stresses. The Japs also had that problem on DD's because they were genuinely underbuilt.

The RS-25s cost $146M each so the SLS costs at the very minimum $584M. I think most estimates, that aren't from contractors, for the whole stack being somewhere between $1B and $2B.

That would genuinely make more sense than what what actually went down. Except for the US and Britain basically all BB's were objectively trash. Germany just got constantly shelled, the Japs had no fuel and were too anxious to risk them, Italy "...", the Brits were forced to use them extensively because they had shit creek, example being the state of Hood and the US only pressed theirs into coastal Bombardment service because what else were they supposed to do. The only time they got really used as intended, it was in the battle of Leyte Gulf, which was basically just the Japanese doing their own death march because honor and shit.
