I don't think she personally was responsible for the movie's exaggerations. There was segregation and discrimination, but depicting what it was really like may not have made for a movie that had mass appeal. They had her join the group later in the movie so that it was more dramatic. Interestingly the astronaut they sent up really did ask for her approval specifically, but it wasn't on the launchpad like in the movie.

They weren't and still aren't. The few instances of even remedially competent black women in STEM are rewarded with massive scholarships and praise at pretty much every major University in America/Canada.

These three women had valuable contributions as people who assisted in the hand computations necessary to complete the first moon landing. They filled in equations which were figured out by primarily white men. They were probably significantly more intelligent than the average person in America but to call them geniuses is a pretty significant stretch.
