It's great for others if you have the virus because you aren't spitting out droplets and you aren't coughing it everywhere. It's great if you don't have the virus because you aren't touching your face and are less likely to get anything in your mouth.
So yeah, it's a decent defense but it's not going to grant you immunity or anything.
Combined with common sense and some obsessive hand washing you'd be pretty safe.
