Made a post on /g/ about this a few hours ago. I think America needs to be the dominant player in tech (simply because China is an authoritarian dictatorship). But in terms of the tech itself, it's pretty much a level playing field. Even the great scientists and mathematcians in history like Einstein, Newton, Von Neumann would be nothing special if they were born in the 21st century due to saturation of the field.
It's really hard to make significant process now and whoever does it, deserves it.
Anyhow, I still hope America stays ahead - because the alternative isn't good for anyone.

Pretty spot on. Science is determined by politics (grants, national lab budgets etc) so whichever country has the better politics ultimately has the better science. Not saying America is all that but it's still hell of a lot better than China.

We should look at the aspects besides pure geography. America in the age of Trump and probably decades to come, does not know what it wants to do or how it wants to do it. I'll be laughing if these forever Trump retards stay in power long enough to try selling military cooperation to the SEA countries kind of like how they tried to do it with S. Korea. It will be interesting to see which offer these countries will take when one side is hiking up tariffs on you and slapping a bigger price tag for military protection versus the other side who still believes in and practices free-flow of international commerce and is more able, day by day, to keep your paid protection out of your waters own waters.

I don't know if it's just IQ. As was said already, Japanese have pretty high average IQs. What drove the west forward in leaps and bounds were a few outlier geniuses who were given relatively free rein, relative to other countries, despite all struggle.

But the way China is being run, I don't think they will ever overtake the west. Intelligent people don't like being constrained. And scientific advancements, breaking new ground, questioning the status quo - that's not something that flourishes in a country where you can't even compare the president to Pooh without being arrested.

Science needs freedom and it needs taking chances on a few high IQ people that can make the next breakthrough. We have a lot of IT grunts nowadays, a lot of code monkeys. I have worked at several large US software companies. They all pride themselves with hiring the very best, but I was somewhat disappointed: yes, there are some super smart ones, which lead the flagship products, but the projects are so huge that most of the people companies hire, and most of the paper being published, are just glorified grunt work. Well paid grunt work, but nothing really novel. Sometimes I felt we were just duct taping things together and overcame obstacles with more people, more hardware, more resources, not smarter ideas. I didn't really feel like I was learning anything new. It also didn't feel like it really was the goal. We just did more of what was safe. There was little innovation.

Now I am back in academia because I was hoping it would be more fulfilling. I am depressed because all we are doing is throwing ever more datasets into the same machine learning models. I would really like to be part of the next big technology but I'm not sure anymore where that is going to be.

japan has been cutting money from science for decades. they also have other issues, like reluctance to learn/speak english, hire immigrants outside asia, they dont pay phd's, etc. even with those problems japan has very good science. could be better when you compare to germany, canada or italy, though.

Call me naive if you want, but the way the American domestic politics and international politics is allowing itself to play out in reaction to the mountains of purported evidence of growing Chinese military, technological, and military capability (overseas African bases, Chinese money in western universities, 9-dash line, etc). seem to reveal to me something real in the fear of an American decline. But I suppose if I simply come to my senses and accept that America will always get the best and remain the best and therefore attract the best ad infinitum as some sort of self-evident circular argument I have to accept, then this will make me wiser than those led by /pol/, the MSM, CFR, or whoever is shitting their pants right now.
