https://sandiego.urbdezine.com/2015/05/28/what-is-a-safe-distance-to-live-or-work-near-high-auto-emission-roads/
>PMs from auto emissions are elevated within 1,000 feet (300 meters) of a major highway. A Denver study indicated that children living roughly within that distance were eight times as likely to develop leukemia and six times as vulnerable to all types of cancer. In another study, children under 5 years of age admitted to hospitals with asthma emergencies were significantly more likely to live within 500 meters (1,640 feet) of a major highway when traffic flow exceeded 24,000 vehicles per hour than those who lived further away or when traffic flow was less. Particle levels return to near normal beyond that distance.
>A 2009 Study found that ultra-fine particulate concentration in the aircan extend 1.5 miles downwind of a freeway, particularly in the hours before sunrise.

>The area most affected, they concluded, was roughly the band within 0.2 to 0.3 miles (300 to 500 meters) of the highway.
>Adults living closer to the road—within 300 meters—may risk dementia. In 2017, a study of residents of Ontario, Canada, found that those who lived close to heavy traffic had a higher risk of dementia. Researchers found the strongest association among those who lived closest to the roads (less than 50 meters), who had never moved and who lived in major cities. A study of older men in 2011 also found that long-term exposure to traffic pollution increased their risk of having poor cognition

If you're an adult and you do not live within 1,000-15000 meters of a highway, then you are probably fine, unless you walk around in cities every day for hours. There is little that you can do about this other than living away from a highway/city. You need to participate in society, and the vaat majority of society is near highways and in cities. You could wear a proper filtration mask when you go into the city/highway and solve the problem, but it looks very ugly and everyone will ask why you're wearing a mask.
