It's only an investment because it's needed to get into most programs. However, the test itself is just are you a high school math/english guru. Not efficient or knowledgeable but almost an expert. You could easily 100% the test in a day with resources and time.

If anything the test shows "will this guy put in effort to become extremely efficient at some arbitrary task because we told them to". That is my objection. I'd much rather have a math final style test where it's maybe 2-3hrs to answer difficult questions in calculus, topology, combinatorics, etc though if you're a math guru you'll be in the top %ile of math majors.

Yes, uni/college are very overpriced. However saying you could learn something like med or something STEM related (unless it’s an online course), is pretty unrealistic. You’ll end up with a general understanding but not anything that employers look for.
Plus, the timely access to professors, experts and having your course structured is just time-efficient. You’ll end up spending so much longer to learn the same amount of content as a 4-year eng major.

>constantly hear stories of the professors I like getting fucked over by the administration

This is the life of a college professor. It is not about research. It is not about teaching. It is about appeasing a retarded administration. That is your job: be a good boy and let the administration castrate you.

I said fuck that, ran away as fast as I can. I still have aspirations to teach and research, but I never want to be economically dependent on this system. I want to be a professional and then offer to teach classes on a contract basis where I can enjoy the joy of teaching but if the university ever starts disrespecting me as it disrespected my professors, I can just fuck off as they are not my livelihood.

I'll give you an example. I mean, I'm not 100% innocent, I'm a bit scatterbrained and this was the very first lab I had been in. But when he was showing me western blotting, for example, he told me to write everything down. So I wrote everything that I could and I got all the numbers down, and mind me, he never gave me a protocol until after his little tutorial. So when I was doing it myself, I got to the part where I have to move the gel from the plastic case to the transfer membrane. This is more of a skill than something you can write down, and I didn't know the best way to do it. I wanted his help and his advice and he just raised his voice and was all "YOU DIDN'T WRITE THIS DOWN? YOU WEREN'T PAYING ATTENTION?." My first fucking time doing this by they way. One step I wanted help with. He gave me like a ten minute lecture on how I need to pay attention and how I should have some sort of photographic memory watching people do things and writing shit down while I don't even have a protocol. I think a pack of 10 gels cost like 150 bucks so this is to save a $15 gel. No, no cutting edge research, we were setting up a facility to using a premade protocol from a similar facility. He was getting mad at other people too. Always talking about how the "undergrads" never did their jobs.

I'm just getting the feeling that success in academia isn't necessarily about creativity or how daring you are but about how good you are at sucking cock. Because every single person in that lab was a cocksucker. Maybe good people deep down, but cocksuckers, and deeply insecure.

Kinda drunk right now, sorry for ranting.

I haven't even got there yet and honestly I don't even think I want to, unless I'm on the winning side. I'm thinking that if I do grad school the best option is to go to a relaxed as fuck place where professors aren't jaded assholes and who will actually want to help me.

I'm currently trying to draft as many ideas as I can for a startup and I'll just spend a year catching up on literature and fleshing out specific plans for carrying out these ideas. Even just working an entry level tech job at a pharma company seems better than being an academia slave. Hell, I'll just teach english in SEA as a career if all else fails. Fuck being an adult desu.

He knew he could do whatever the fuck he wanted because I'd never been in another lab. And it's true, I don't know what it's like learning blotting in a normal lab. I think the guy was trying to get rid of me, he didn't like me from the get-go. So I just fucked off, no big deal but now I have another W on my transcript. Industry doesn't even fucking look though, that's only an issue for grad school applications.

Yeah he'd have me write everything down. Not that that's a bad thing, I mean learning to keep a lab notebook is good, but if I had any questions at all he'd get pissed and say he told me before whether he told me before or not. Dude was so sure of himself he answered questions based on self-confidence rather than actual memory.

Hopefully you find something that works as working in academia does seem to have some upside. But thinking about this rationality, what are our expectations? We both went to a mid tier university, one where the competition was not as high and where the assfuckery should not have been so rampant. What is the solution? If we go to a lower tier university, then problems for underfunding and mediocre students will likely cause the same stress. If we even manage to make it to a higher tier university, those seem to be the places where the real psychopaths thrive and are in fierce battle with each other.

I recently went to a presentation from some cambridge thot about a genuinely interesting topic. She was knowledgeable, and she seemed normal. But every now and then she would suddenly add in really odd petty remarks about unnamed people from her academic circles that just show how horrible of a person she is. Why are you trash-talking some random people during your presentation for something completely unrelated? And she did this like 5 times, never naming names, but implying she was extremely salty about those people. I serioulsy do not want to be like her. I just want to be happy, man.

I hope your start-up plans work. The business world is probably even more ruthless, but at least there success is truly self-made. There are no bullshit meme requirements, just hard work. I am not the kind of person for that so I'll just work my normal job until I can further my academic plans.

Fuck, I relate to this so much. In that lab I was talking about, I could feel myself becoming like them. I was starting to act shitty to the administration of the building with the labs, I was getting paranoid, and generally developing this sort of superiority complex and inferiority complex at the same time: all the while, thinking, "I can't become assholes like these guys, I just can't."

I'm starting to think that the only way to work with psychopaths and not become a psychopath is to have power over the psychopaths. The thing about psychos is that most of them aren't particularly creative, they just have a vague goal and the follow it, perhaps better than most. But they're not really smarter than anyone, they're just really good at convincing everyone that they are. I have friends that are doing stupid shit like getting graphic design degrees and music theory degrees and I know for a fact that they are very intelligent, but I just wonder what they'd be doing if they were also assholes. Jesus christ I just want to help people, I want to contribute to society in a scientific and meaningful way.

Within each university there is a lot of variance in the work cultures between different research groups. So while you are right to not want to be like that petty person from Cambridge, there is no reason to think that every person from Cambridge or similarly famous institutions would be like that.

A large part of the reason I chose the current group I'm in was that the PI was very kind and down-to-earth and the other members were friendly as well. Granted, my PI isn't the biggest name out there (in part due to being quite early-career still), but the university name brings some brand recognition in itself so I didn't feel the need to double down on the prestige points. That said, there are people working for more famous PIs who, as far as I can tell, seem happy and well-adjusted.

Of course, within any workplace there will be some amount of drama and unpleasant people, it is unavoidable when you have a lot of people working together in a building.

I go to Tufts. Their student tours are often not great, but if you get the chance to sit in on classes, you'll notice that their professors are generally pretty good quality and often good at teaching as well (if they're not good at teaching, they'll at least be good at research). The social scene is not too energetic and if you're not part of a sports team you'll need to find a good club to fit in on. The classes are quite difficult as well, especially for comp sci/school of engineering/International relations. And not everyone is stressed 24/7.
Northeastern is a great choice as well, I have met many talented people from there, and I regret looking down upon it as much as I did when I was in high school. They do a great job of getting students exposure in industry.

I suggest you go somewhere where they do rotations. Actually I've found that the more cutting edge and well-respected a surpervisor is, the better atmosphere and the kinder he is to his students. It's probably because mediocre professors feel inadequate and want to take it out on the people they have power over. I don't know why perfectly good students end up in those kinds of labs, but don't make that mistake if you go to grad school. Do your due diligence.

ask grad students how the lab is. If they are open, they are happy usually. if they are little more reserved and careful, you also need to be careful.
