you should really try reading a chapter and taking notes or writing a summary of what you've learned. chances are that you'll be amazed.

What helps is also after reading regularly just close your eyes and meditate on what you've read. Ask questions about the material. Try to explain to yourself the flow of the proofs. I found that really helps deepen understanding of the material for me.
