He did it because he is passionate about mathematics, not for anything else.
And he recused the prize partly due to not wanting fame and partly for disagreeing with the idea of this kind of prizes. He's not the only one with this kind of view either. Feymann is on record saying he only accepted the Nobel because people would talk about and pester him more if he were to recuse it, to give an example.

Wrong. He rejected it, because slightly before him they considered some Asian guy. That Asian guy actually had a nonsense proof and the jury was unable to see that. Perelman rejected because they weren't even capable of detecting that guy's bullshit and he did not want to get a prize from people obviously incapable of understanding the impact.
